My speculation on OU.

Disclaimer: I know nothing. I have no sources. Just my gut feeling.
1. OU will not name a new coach before Sunday, maybe not until Tuesday or even Wednesday.
Reasons. a) Coach may be coaching this week. b) If the AD really was surprised, as he claims, that Riley was leaving, then you don't hammer out the details of a multi-year, multi-million dollar contract and all the other stuff (just read what is being reported in Riley's contract) in less than a week. Even if the guy isn't coaching this week (Venables, Campbell, et. al.) it will still take a week.
2. Venables may be on the guys being vetted by OU and he may eventually take the job (I don't think he will, explained later) but it isn't a done deal now.
Reason: He and Dabo have built a relationship to the point I can't imagine him accepting the job, not telling Dabo and staying on the recruiting trail. I think, if he had already accepted the job, he and Dabo would find the best way possible for him not to be actively recruiting. (Heck, he just made a home visit with a linebacker who is going to enroll in January.) I think he and Dabo have a relationship (and the mutual respect for each other) he would keep Dabo apprised of his situation. I don't see him as being the guy who would blind side Dabo (like Kelly did and, apparently Riley did).
3. I still think OU will first go after a coach with a track record as a HC. I have no idea who it would be but there are more than 1 or 2 that I can think of (Campbell, Kiffin, Narduzzi, Leach, and others possible I'm sure.)
4. If no coach is announced by Thursday of next week, it is more and more likely that Bob Stoops will be named the HC and this was orchestrated from the beginning.
5. My conclusion: Until a new coach is named I will continue to recognize the possibility that Venables will be hired. I don't think it is inevitable, but I do think it is possible. Selfishly, I hope he doesn't leave.
Repeated disclaimer: I have no evidence to back up any of these guesses. Just my gut.

I have no idea if you are spot on, but, as always, enjoyed your post, and the thought you put into it,
Go Tigers.

I agree with your thinking. It may very well be BV but I think they are going to take the time to look around before making a decision. Everyone is saying they have to make a quick decision for recruiting but they also have to get it right. It is a long term decision.
I watched the OU press conference with the AD. One thing that jumped out to me is that he said people were interested in the job that would surprise you. They may have a big name out there that nobody knows about.

Yes, very interesting presser. Switzer even mentioned leach. But if you've listened to berry Trammel, interesting on his inside take. A lot of the ou team stoops, switzer etc still have the horrible taste of schneliberger, who is the only outsider they've hired.
As he stated, if beamer was still there, he would already been announced. My informal scar donors told me beamer already took his name out.
Sounds like they're pretty high on Ruhle... And I hope they are. Pretty scathing piece that berry wrote today on Riley's diminishing offense over the last 3 years. Makes you think what was known as Brit alluded too above.

Too much at stake, especially with them heading into the SEC. Can you afford to take a gamble on a coordinator that would just be learning the ropes as THE guy? So that gives me pause on someone like BV. Especially being a defensive guy in an offensive game. I think Ruhl is the guy here.

I don't see OU needing a week to hire Venables if he's their top choice. OU's top target(s) are coaching this weekend and BV may be their fallback option.

Recruiting is about to get a lot tougher for them, imo, which is an issue considering impeding expansion in 2-3 years (better competition + more pressure to perform). USC is about to have CA on lock again, A&M/Texas will be cleaning up in TX + Bama/LSU have a presence there too, and then ND/Michigan/OSU loading up in the Midwest.
OU is still a big brand, but dynamics have changed, and it will affect them. Stoops will be there breathing down the new HC’s neck and fans will quickly become agitated with anything less than 10+ wins.
Meanwhile Clemson is still in a great position to contend for titles for the foreseeable future and Coach V has all of his guys in place, a ton of equity built up here, and he and his family are happy. There’s a lot of risk in making that jump, especially right now. He’s still relatively young and could continue to field dominant defenses until the last of his kids have finished up school. Then, maybe he takes his shot. Still a relatively young man in the coaching world.

Good assessment. Nobody is mentioning Finkell. I guess he would be coming from a smaller school and that may have red flags.

You spell things out so well. Wish I was that good. Thanks.
Don't think your number 4 will happen. Stoops seems genuine in saying he wants no part in head coach. I could see him taking it for maybe a year if they can't find that "perfect" match. Or possibly taking it to develop an assistant to take over. Jmho
