TNET: Clemson not getting help in improving strength of schedule ranking

Clemson not getting help in improving strength of schedule ranking

Sports Betting Dime (SBD) has released their proprietary strength-of-schedule rankings and it looks like Clemson is in for another year of getting lampooned by the national media for a weak schedule they have little control over. Full Story »

every schedule is a weak schedule for Clemson***

This can easily be improved. Forget the Akron’s, the SCStates, and ALL the other sure ooc wins and find a good power five team to play a home and home. Eventually the ACC is going to improve but it will take another year or two.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Clemson is already doing that...

Jul 2, 2020, 10:26 AM

as evidenced by previous series with Auburn, Texas A&M, Georgia, and Notre Dame, and they will continue to do that with future OOC games scheduled against Georgia, LSU, Notre Dame and Oklahoma.

However, Clemson is adamant about playing seven home games annually which is why you will continue to see teams like Akron and SC State on the schedule. They're not going to schedule a home and away series with two ooc Power 5 opponents in the same year and give-up the seventh home game.

As a side note, Clemson has been trying for years to schedule a home and away series with Penn State but Penn State insists on a 2 for 1 type arrangement which is something Clemson isn't going to do.

Nice post Big C.. .

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How did you hear that about Penn State?

Jul 2, 2020, 2:30 PM [ in reply to Clemson is already doing that... ]

Why would we ever do a 2 for 1 for any school? Much less Penn State?

They aren't even near the top of my list for an OOC opponent. Florida, Texas, USC, Michigan, Tennessee, Nebraska would all go first.

So, Georgia Tech gets "rewarded" in the schedule rankings

Jul 2, 2020, 9:53 AM

for playing a real SEC team in Georgia, while Clemson gets lampooned due to playing a fake SEC team in South Carolina.

Interestingly (at least to me), the records in the two series are not very much different:

Georgia leads vs Tech 68-41-5.

Clemson leads vs Coots 71-42-4.

And yes, for all tens of you Georgia fans, I know you lead against us 42-18-4.
It is closer if you go from the start of the Danny Ford era to now, 6-10-1.
And, we're coming for you going forward!

Re: So, Georgia Tech gets "rewarded" in the schedule rankings

Jul 2, 2020, 10:50 AM

Clemson used to struggle against the SEC because it was easier to recruit for schools whose ath-u-letes didn't have to know how to read and write.

Re: TNET: Clemson not getting help in improving strength of schedule ranking

Jul 2, 2020, 9:56 AM

Yep, not our fault but we just have to hope the hated coots improve and start winning again and in the meantime the only other option (though schedules are set so far in advance, this would take years), as you suggest, is to change the out-of-conference schedule. We have not need to play the Akrons and Citadels of the world - we have plenty of cupcakes on the schedule already. If you don't want to put a possible playoff contender in there then at least get one or more mid to upper SEC or Big10 school in there. Otherwise be prepared to whine when we have a bad day (or 14 players with a virus) and that is the year that it happens to us instead of others. SOS won't ever keep us out of the playoffs but it may very well reduce the margin of error to zero loses.

It will help a LOT when UNC, Miami,VPI Louisville and a few others get their program headed in the right direction. And it’s coming ... sooner than later.

Re: TNET: Clemson not getting help in improving strength of schedule ranking

Jul 2, 2020, 10:23 AM

It's hard to figure what the heck Clemson could do.

We start on the road at Georgia Tech in Atlanta September 3. It's not our fault the Bees - who nobody seems to remember have won four national titles, one more than us! - are reloading after going option for ten years and for whatever inexplicable reason under Paul Johnson, didn't trouble themselves to recruit the talent in their home city that has become, incidentally, an even more loaded talent pool than Miami-Dade nowadays.

We get Louisville the week after that. Bobby Petrino had them as high as #3 just four years ago and Lamar Jackson won the Heisman that same year. But then in classic Bobby Petrino fashion he ran out of JUCO transfers and he didn't trouble himself to recruit defensive players, and the Cards cratered. Not our fault.

We're at Florida State October 10th. Jimbo left Willy Taggart a dumpster fire, who then proceeded to throw bat guano and cow manure on that dumpster fire, who then handed it off to Mike Norvell...who only this offseason decided to throw even more kerosene on that bat-guano/cow-manure dumpster fire. Not our fault. These jokers won the Natty in just 2014, if you can believe it.

We're at Notre Dame November 7th...who have actually lost just six games the last three football seasons. It's not our fault that seems kind of precious...on account of the fact that Clemson has lost only five in the last five years, which is kind of vertigo-inducing. You can lose five games in one season and still go to a lower-tier bowl game.

And of course, we get South Carolina, they of the mighty SEC, November 28th. Not our fault that despite seating 80K and having facilities almost equal to ours and a conference revenue stream bigger than ours they're losing to the likes of App State...at home.

We do our best; when you go OOC to grab Notre Dame and go looking to see if there's any SEC squads that want some, you're not scheduling soft. The biggest problem with Clemson scheduling opponents is, Clemson can't schedule Clemson.

I will add I'm a bit concerned about Louisville and UVA the first month. Those teams could be sneaky-good this year. Satterfield at Louisville is, IMHO, as good a play-caller and offensive brain as Bobby Petrino while being a significantly better program-builder, and Bronco Mendenhall has UVA playing some really good ball; they just didn't look very good against Clemson because they lost 6 DB's over the course of last season and that ain't good when you're up against the likes of Trevor Lawrence, Tee Higgins, and Justin Ross. But the last two of those guys won't be playing for us this year, and we need some young wideouts to step up and be ready from Minute 1.

Re: TNET: Clemson not getting help in improving strength of schedule ranking

Jul 2, 2020, 11:07 AM

"It's hard to figure what the heck Clemson could do."

Bingo!

We already use one of the most difficult scheduling formulas in the entire FBS. Every year we play our 8 designated conference foes, USC and another P5 if possible, one G5 and one FCS. That's 10 P5 programs every single year. That's more than Ohio St plays (usually 9 B1G + 3 G5s, but occasionally adding a 10th P5 like VT or OK.) That's more than 10 of the mighty SEC schools play.

Obviously, while the ACC is down, they are some of the weakest P5 foes. But they are still P5. P5 athletes choose P5 schools because of better exposure, better competition and better resources, so let's not pretend that it is a meaningless designation like ESPN does while promoting the AAC.

Over a 10-year period without using circular reasoning based on end-of-season records and rankings, but based solely on # of P5 foes scheduled: the strongest schedules in the country belong to Southern Cal and Stanford and ND with over 100 P5 opponents, and then a cluster who have played 95-99. That cluster includes Clemson and FSU from the ACC, and GA, FL and SC from the SEC. In addition to the number of P5 opponents, All of these teams also play true road games vs their P5 foes.

Alabama plays 9 P5 games per year on average, one of which is frequently a neutral site game. That's by far one of the easiest scheduling formulas. St Nick says he is committed to making their schedule harder, but he wants the SEC to make it uniform so no one gets an advantage over him while he's toughening it up.

This is all because of COVID-19, when our

Jul 2, 2020, 10:38 AM

spring gane got cancelled due to the COVIDs we lost the toughest opponent on our schedule. Our SOS would look a lot different if we had played that gane.

even if you get a couple good teams on the other division w the rotation you go years between playing them. need to drop the cupcakes and find a couple decent teams out of conf on years when you dont have a Ga or Auburn type game

Jul 2, 2020, 12:11 PM

Agree. It's not Clemson's job to see that their conference foes are fielding competitive teams. That's on the rest of the League.

The ACC's in a down period with the utter collapse of FSU; the debacle of Peterno at Louisville and the fall of VT. Miami's been trying to re assert the "swag" since the mid 2000s.

Louisville is on the rise and will be Clemson's main competition in the Atlantic until FSU can get its act together. Satterfield is a great coach but he needs to recruit like a major P5 program.

Jul 2, 2020, 12:27 PM

home game. With the way our program is rolling, and the ACC + SC is snot, we may have to do the math and pay big for a P5 team to come to the valley with no return game. The year we go undefeated and don't make the playoffs, this will be the big debate. LOL, just LOL at Penn St insisting on a 2 for 1 deal. What that really says is, they don't want to play us.

They warrant a 2 for one from US is one of the most laughable things I’ve heard. Two in our house to one in theirs would make way more sense . Not like they’re bringing a ton to the table compared to us

If not D-RAD, then who is in control of scheduling FCS teams

Jul 2, 2020, 2:26 PM

Akron & Citadel and all the similar cupcakes MUST NOT BE SCHEDULED anymore. You don't have to go get UGA or AUBURN or TEXAS on the schedule, but I think playing Tennessee and Florida would be FANtastic. There is absolutely no reason for us to pay people to come play in Death Valley---subsidizing the weak does not make you strong IMO.

Unwittingly, the media morons are admitting that socialism doesn't work. If it did they would be praising Clemson to high heaven.

Clemson is doing right to ensure strongest scched possible

Jul 2, 2020, 10:02 PM

Giving up the 7th home game to make $4MM and play UGA in a neutral site was the right call. Good on them for biting the bullet and doing it.

It's not as simple as dropping Akron and an FCS school and playing UF and UT. They're hard to schedule. It would have to be way in the future. You also can't play four insane non-conference games. You'd have to matchups the home/road to make it work with U of SC and you'd only have 6 home games every year.

There are numerous reasons to schedule an FCS opponent. It gets discussed every year. I'm not going to list them here and now.

Even when the ACC gets stronger, they are still going to blast our schedule because it's the "ACC." They always have and always will.
