One of the greatest coaches ever and built a program that still has Alabama at the top. A school that produced Frank Howard, Danny Ford, and Dabo Swinney for which we are forever greatful.

Bear Bryant was Bear Bryant For his day ,and time, he was as good as there was.
But like most of those legendary coaches, there time was a different animal.
I doubt seriously any of the old legends would survive todays college landscape.

Kinda like today’s coaches trying to make it “back then.”

I think I wouldn’t trade Dabo for him (great coach tho in his day)

away from everybody else.

I think two things:

Dec 31, 2020, 6:27 PM

1) He was unquestionably the greatest of the old time coaches, IMHO.

2) He could not coach in the modern world of college football. He would be accused of physically and verbally abusing his players. His old time hard line discipline would never be allowed today. And yet, to a man, I have never heard an ex-player of his speak of him with anything other than the greatest of reverence.

Kind of lets you know where and when the world went off the rails.

Really great coach who knew how to get athletes and assistant coaches. Was also Frank Howard's whipping boy as Bear himself is quoted as saying.

Whipping not whopping. Ah cell phone spellchecker

Great coach. My last name is bryant. I used his name once as my uncle to hook up with a bama girl. ??

Faster horses, younger women, older whiskey, more wins!

Bear was old school and a product of his generation ... and he lived an old school life.

Yes, you could say Bear was a good coach; however at the heyday of his career Bama was a program that made it's own rules. This was the time before the 85/25 rule. Bama (Bear) would recruit players that he knew would never set foot on the field at Bama, just to keep them from signing with other teams. It would not be unusual for Bama to have upwards of 125 players or more on scholarship per year. I know several that were very good high school players in their states, went to Bama and never played in a game. Attending class was optional and when their time was up that was it. They returned to their home towns with four wasted years. Both wound up working menial jobs and dying before their time. You be the judge.
