Need Miami to Lose Another Game

Nov 24, 2020, 11:13 AM

If Miami loses another game, the ACC can save face and cancel our game with FSU. (Not sure how that would affect the ND Wake game.). But, if both Clemson and Miami have one loss after Dec 5th, the ACC will send us back to Tallahassee because it would be the PC thing to do. That’s why Swofford and the ACC have delayed rescheduling our game with FSU. As much as I would like to see the Tigers curb-stomp the Noles, I’d prefer we avoid the risk of a return trip to Tallahassee and deal with FSU next year in the Valley. Plus, it’s always easy to pull against Miami.

They don’t play this weekend and they play Wake next weekend. Scheduled to play UNC on the 12th.

Too late to hope for a loss before the FSU makeup game.

Right now Pitt stands in the way. We need to take care of the Panthers first. FSU is of NO importance now

That's true, but I think the point the OP is making is that Miami could make an argument that we should have to play an equal number of games since if we happened to lose another game they would get in ahead of us. Basically, the game with FSU would still matter if both us and Miami have 1 loss since the outcome of the FSU game on the 12th would then determine who gets in between us and Miami. If the FSU game isn't played then we'd get in ahead of Miami automatically.

ACC tiebreaker rules this year allow for the instance that teams have unequal number of games. If two teams have the same number of losses, but different number of wins, the tiebreaker will be head-to-head so long as the "winning" team has played no less than 1 below the league average number of games.

AKA - if no other games are cancelled and Clemson is 8-1 while Miami is 9-1, and the league average is 10 games (which it won't be because several have already been cancelled and won't be made up), then Clemson would be eligible.

The key is to not have Pitt or VT cancelled as well. The ACC will do everything possible to get a game made up if it has an impact on the title game. So any Pitt/VT game scheduled for Dec. 12 would be cancelled to make room for a Clemson games, if necessary.

Yes, I'm aware of that which is why I said we'd get in ahead of Miami if the FSU game isn't made up. My point was that if we're sitting at 8-1 in the ACC while Miami is 9-1 then Miami would have an argument that the FSU game should have to be made up since a loss to FSU in that situation would put Miami in ahead of us. Basically, if we and Miami both have 1 loss then the outcome of the FSU game would matter in terms of who plays in the ACC Championship game.

The ACC could decide the game doesn't need to be made up since we won the head to head game with Miami, or they could decide that the game needs to be made up since an upset win by FSU would change who plays in the title game.

I hear what you're saying, but two things:
1) There isn't an "argument" as you stated. The rules for 2020 are the rules, agreed upon by the schools preseason. They knew games could/would be cancelled. So Miami wouldn't have an argument. Maybe their fans would, but they knew this was a possibility.
2) The biggest reason for no argument is what the next poster said. Miami already has a game it has to makeup and that is currently scheduled for 12/19. Miami will be playing its ninth ACC game on 12/12 and would finish that day at best 8-1. If we don't have VT/Pitt cancelled and win both, we'd also be 8-1. Both teams would have the same record and neither would be able to say, "Yeah, but if you played (insert team)." If for some reason we did play FSU on 12/12 and if somehow lost, we'd be 8-2 while Miami would be 8-1 (assuming). Then, it'd be the other way around. Clemson would want Miami to play that 10th game because, as you stated, it could decide who plays in the title game. By then it's too late.

Sorry for being so long there. All that to say, we just control what we can control. Beat Pitt, beat VT, and we are in. No need to play FSU. And if the ACC thinks we should, then we should go and beat FSU too. Go Tigers.

miami-GT is scheduled for 12/19 - Miami can't get that one

Nov 24, 2020, 9:48 AM [ in reply to Re: Need Miami to Lose Another Game ]

in before 12/12. So if Clemson doesn't play on 12/12 but gets the other 2 in then we'd be sitting at the same # of games as Miami heading into championship. The only way GT-Miami gets played is if Miami doesn't the championship. Miami has to make the champ by playing 9 ACC games not 10 so they have to have a Clemson loss or multiple Clemson cancellations.

It doesn’t matter how many times you say it...

Nov 24, 2020, 5:23 PM

We are going to have to read the ‘worried about Miami win %’ posts until the day of the ACC championship game and probably afterwards.
Not sure why people can’t do the maths.
Miami will be trying to catch up to our number of games played on Dec. 12 while we are resting up for the ACCCG and telling FSU that we’ll set them straight next year.
Then, on the same day we are getting revenge on the Domers, the Canes will be beating GT and wrapping up an Orange Bowl bid....and everyone will go home happy.

None of that matters. We have to win out. It does not matter what Miami does. We better be ready for Pitt. This will not be a easy game. They are better than their record and have momentum. We need to be cautious if this game.

FSU isn't going to happen. You can take that to the bank.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

WE HAVE THE HEAD TO HEAD AGAINST MIAMI.

Nov 24, 2020, 9:11 AM

The only way our head to head win doesn't matter is if Miami plays 2 (TWO) more conference games than we do.

Assuming we play Pitt and VT, then we do not have to play the FSU game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Miami plays UNC this season. UNC will definitely put up

Excuse me?? Did you not watch Clemson mop the floor with the Canes. Head to head done deal.

It is a really bad FSU team after all. Not a mediocre team.

If we go down there 80 plus here we come.
