Flatfooting or Clogging

May 5, 2020, 7:36 PM

Even though clogging is more popular I think flatfooting done by a handsome woman is sexy as h&all.

Definitely interesting . I just don’t think of it as sexy . For some reason or other , I’m reminded of Buddy Ebsen . It’s a talent for sure .

It actually looks like she took a page out of the Irene Ryan's Hillbilly dance book;)

Is that the old guy who danced to the banjo music on Deliverance?

He looks a little rough, but all in all I'd say he's aged well.

Very similar ..... originated in the Appalachian Mountains and those folks were primarily Scots/Irish. I love that stuff!

I thought the same thing, and it makes perfect sense given that Appalachian culture is predominantly Scots-Irish.

I believe Irish step dancing "frowns" upon significant arm movement. Typically, arms are held straight down to your side.

Supposedly, this tradition is rooted in a time when the English forced Irish captives to dance for them...while their arms were bound.

Hadn't heard of flatfooting before today, but it's enjoyable to watch. I love clogging, which is unusual for someone who doesn't have roots in Appalachia. Down here in the Lowcountry hardly anyone's even heard of clogging. And it's becoming a lost art even in traditionally popular areas.

If you have any interest in Appalachian music, make an effort to visit the Floyd Country Store in Floyd, Va. on a Friday night. Would be a good side trip the next time the Tigers play VPI. It’s like going back in time and definitely worth the trip. Good ole pickin’ and grinnin’!

I have childhood memories of visiting a similar place near Oconee State Park with my scout troop, as well as attending a clogging exhibition/competition that same weekend. Until a few months ago all I could remember is that it was near Stumphouse Tunnel and that I seem to recall walking through what felt like a convenience store to a room in the back where they played. Earlier this year I camped in Oconee SP for the first time since I was a kid and recognized both the dance hall (which is on park property) and the old building where they played music, which has sadly been closed for a while now. It was really neat to discover those places again.

When I was in high school in the early 60's and at Clemson for the rest of the 60's I'd go to Oconee State Park every Friday night and to the Mountain City Playhouse north of Clayton, GA every Saturday night for square dancing and clogging. Great times! In the early 60's the dances at Oconee were in a building around 100 yards up the hill from the swimming area. They now use it for offices and a small store. Later they built the "Barn" near the camp ground. They still have dances there but nothing like they used to. People used to come from as far away as Anderson every Friday just for the square dance.

A group of Clemson boys were great cloggers. Since there was a paucity of girls at Clemson in those days, half would dress up as women and put on an exhibition dance. I believe they were called the Cow College Cloggers. As I recall, Jimmy Howard was one of them.

Depending on when the previous writer used to go up there, the building he referred to may have been Cuzzin's General Store, where SC28 and SC107 split to go to HIghlands and Cashiers. They used to have bluegrass pickin' on Saturday night. Not sure if it started in the late 60's or in the 70's. I remember going there in the late 70's.

Cuzzins is indeed the place. That is the first time I remember hearing bluegrass music, much less live, and it was magical. I was roughly 14-15 at the time which would have made it somewhere between 1987 and 1989.

Looks like it's been closed for a while now. Makes me sad. I pulled it up on Google Maps and while their current shot of the storefront is about 4 years old, it looks like it's had a "For Sale" sign on it since at least 2012. One website I found mentioned it's been closed since 2008. Yet another website referred to it as "Hillbilly's Country Store" and that music was played outdoors, which I do not recall. There's no date on that website though and both the content and the photos look quite dated--I'd say mid-90's at best.

Many excellent musicians went through Cuzzins store during the day. Personally, I know one who is currently playing in a local bluegrass band and another who is a big time professional bluegrass player. So many more could have been proffessional players if they had a mind to.

I attended Rabun Gap Nacoochee School in Rabun Gap Ga. had to pass through Mountain City to get there. Speed trap town with no stop light. Foxfire and bluegrass run deep in those parts.
