Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

Oct 18, 2020, 1:51 PM

Like every other year, only 2-4 team look legit again. Wish folks would retire talks if an 8-team playoff.

I would like it still.

Yes. They wanna see the Bucknuts play BYU so they can see what a Bucknut playoff win looks like.

O310 is 2-2 in the CFP. So they already know what a playoff win looks like. Just ask Bama and Oregon.

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

There should be a 6 to 8 team playoff for one reason. The power 5 conference champs need to get an automatic bid then 1-3 team open bid. That is the only way to keep all power 5 conferences happy or just interested in the process. We don't get to see many teams from the west coast but a team could get hot near the end or halfway through the season and we might not ever get to seem them. It would seem more fair to me. I know Dabo likes the 4 team playoff.

I say the top 6 teams go in. No automatic bids. 1 & 2 get a bye.

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

Oct 18, 2020, 9:52 PM [ in reply to Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff? ]

SCHOOL GAMES RECORD TITLES WON
Alabama 9 6-3 2 (2015, 2017)
Clemson 9 6-3 2 (2016, 2018)
Ohio State 4 2-2 1 (2014)
LSU 2 2-0 1 (2019)
Georgia 2 1-1 0
Oregon 2 1-1 0
Oklahoma 4 0-4 0
Florida State 1 0-1 0
Michigan State 1 0-1 0
Notre Dame 1 0-1 0
Washington 1 0-1 0
Alabama and Clemson have both played at least double the amount of CFP games as any other program. Oklahoma remains the only school to play in more than two CFP games without a victory.

So based on this background, how many bums need to be in playoffs? I've heard Bill Hancock say in person at Savannah QB Club, that he and BCS committee want the regular season to have some relevance.

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

Oct 18, 2020, 2:02 PM

I think it is ridiculous not to have all Power 5 conference champions in the playoff. Then there should be a requirement that the three at large teams must be conference champions or division champions. That's right no special treatment for ND.

Maybe one day in the future they will play big boy football.

As of now, 4 teams is plenty. #4 usually gets wrecked

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

Oct 18, 2020, 2:03 PM

If the goal is to ensure the most deserving teams have a chance at a National Championship, the 4-team playoff model has proven to meet that goal 100% of the time.

But, if the goal is to give us a little more football, then sure, why not?

An 8-team playoff is not needed. But, I wouldn't mind a little extra football around the holidays.

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

Oct 18, 2020, 2:07 PM

Negative.
In 2017 when Alabama didn't even win their division, they did not deserve to be in the playoff.
The CFP made it clear that they don't pick who they think is the most the deserving, they pick who they think are the four best.

So they skipped out on the SEC Championship Game, rested, avoided injuries, watched some film, and kicked our butts. Oh, well. But it's not based on who deserves to be there because they certainly didn't.

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

Oct 18, 2020, 2:50 PM [ in reply to Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff? ]

Actually, this is an example of how the system worked. Bama won it all that year. So they were the best team, even if Aubie gave them one loss.

If the goal is to try to crown the best team as champion, the system has worked. Not perfect, but 4 teams is the best option.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Actually, you're full of it

..."So they skipped out on the SEC Championship Game, rested, avoided injuries, watched some film, and kicked our butts. Oh, well. But it's not based on who deserves to be there because they certainly didn't."

Bama didn't deserve to get in and they certainly didn't deserve all the special treatment and extra advantages that were allowed to their team.

Total Heist!!!

I just don’t understand this “most deserving” talk. If it’s about who deserves it, just play the season and crown the best team the champ. Why bother playing the games?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

because the SEC would be crowned every year?

unless you would consider the KB team not competitive. I would disagree if you did. Up until that double KB pick, it was a very tough and competitive game. The UGA/OU was a 2OT game.

yes because it will make the SEC look bad! It will show how they are so over rank with ave teams at best. It give each conference to be represented.

Just thinking about it...

but a 8 team playoff in the SEC and STILL South Carolina would not meet the cut (5th in the East).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Prob'ly ought to just have a two team playoff this year.

Oct 18, 2020, 2:20 PM

until they start to let small schools into the play offs, I say keep it at four.
If they invite the sunbelt or any of that group- go to (8).

If you go to (8) now- it will just put more teams from the SEC into it- (it is the greatest, hardest, smash mouth, high octane, toughest conference around. I am just a bitter!

Oct 18, 2020, 11:50 PM

Does anyone think UNC should even be a Top 20 team and they were at #5 last week (before losing to FSU-lol!!). Of the other Power 5 teams waiting to play, how many are true top 5 talents...Ohio State & Oregon? NAH...maybe in 4 or 5 years if the Power 5 break away from NCAA and do away with playing FCS schools & other cupcakes in order to see who the REAL power schools are.

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

An expanded playoff will only happen when someone PAYS for it; through huge TV rights contracts and sponsorship Money.

It will be four games this year and should be.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Folks still want an 8 team playoff?

Oct 19, 2020, 9:22 AM

Stay at 4. No reason to have more except more money. It might be hard to find 4 this year

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This year should just be 2

Oct 19, 2020, 11:40 AM

Clemson and let the other schools pool their players to see if they can put together a competitive team.
