CLEMSON – It was a perfect day for baseball – sunny skies and 70 degrees – but Clemson played less than perfect and lost the series to Wright State.

Clemson (1-2) had just six hits in the 9-2 loss to the Raiders Sunday afternoon at Doug Kingsmore Stadium, allowing the Raiders to leave Clemson with the series win. It was the second time in three years that the Tigers lost the opening series of the season, as they lost to West Virginia two years ago.

On the weekend, Clemson totaled just 23 hits – 11 of which came Friday night. Clemson finished 4-for-23 with runners in scoring position on the weekend and finished just 9-for-46 against left-handed pitching in the three-game series.

Wright St. stole eight bases in the series, while Clemson mustered just two.

K.J. Bryant, Seth Beer, Grayson Byrd and Patrick Cromwell all had a hit for the Tigers. Beer and freshman Logan Davidson have eight of the Tigers’ 12 RBI (Beer 4, Davidson 4). Beer, Davidson and Byrd have 12 of Clemson’s 22 hits.

Davidson connected on his first career homer in the ninth, a solo shot to center.

Clemson starting pitcher’s Alex Eubanks’ day was done with just one out in the fifth. He gave up five runs on six hits – three doubles and a home run – while striking out six. The Moore (SC) native faced 20 batters and threw 71 total pitches – 53 strikes.

Eubanks pitched a quick first inning but ran into trouble early in the second. First baseman Gabe Snyder laced a first-pitch single to right field, advanced to second on a passed ball and stole third before scoring on a hard hit double off the left field wall by Adrian Marquez. Seth Gray hit a ball to straightaway center that hit off of K.J. Bryant’s glove and over the wall, giving Wright State a 3-0 lead.

Clemson got a run back with a solo shot off the batter’s eye in centerfield by Seth Beer, to cut Wright State’s lead to 3-1 at the end of four innings. It was the second home run of the season for Beer, who was the National Player of the Year last season.

Kevin Whatley led off the fifth inning for Wright State with a double down the left field line and scored on a double to right by Gray. Brandon Giltrow laid down a sacrifice bunt and Clemson catcher Kyle Wilkie’s throw to third wasn’t in time, giving the Radiers runners on first and third with nobody out. A sac fly to center by Morrow plated the second run of the inning, extending the Raiders’ lead to 5-1.

Leading off the seventh for the Raiders, Gray – who hit a roller that was misplayed by shortstop Logan Davidson – advanced to second on a sac bunt, took third on a wild pitch and scored on a high throw from Davidson to first on a double-play ball. Wright State made it a 6-1 ballgame through seven.

The Raiders added a single run in the eighth and two more in the ninth to complete the rout.

The Tigers return to action Wednesday at 4 p.m. when they host Western Carolina.
