Tigers fall to NC State in ACC baseball tourney opener

by - Senior Writer -

GREENSBORO -- In winning 12 of their last 14 games and in sweeping FSU last weekend, the Clemson Tigers appeared to temporarily solve the pitching and defensive issues that had plagued them during a mid-season slide.

On Wednesday night in their opening game of the ACC Tournament, the 7th-seeded North Carolina State Wolfpack (37-20) pounded out 16 hits and took advantage of Clemson starter Casey Harman’s early wildness in knocking off the 2nd-seeded Tigers 13-8 at NewBridge Bank Park in Greensboro, N.C.

Harman lasted 5 1/3 innings, giving up five earned runs while striking out eight. However, he also walked four batters and frequently had 3-ball counts on batters that ran up his pitch count. He was replaced in the sixth by Alex Frederick, who gave up four runs while pitching just one-third of an inning in a five-run sixth inning that saw the Wolfpack grab an 8-4 lead.

The Tigers (37-20) jumped on top in the bottom of the first inning, with Brad Miller lining a single to start the inning and scoring on a double to left-center by Jeff Schaus.

The Wolfpack took a 2-1 lead into the third, but Clemson tied the score with two outs when Miller once again singled and scored on a Schaus hit.

The Tigers then took a 5-3 lead in the sixth when Schaus blasted his 14th homer of the season, a two-run shot that almost cleared the protective netting in right field.

The Wolfpack would tack on seven runs in the sixth and seventh innings however, and a three-run homer by Will Lamb in the eighth wasn’t enough to overcome the Wolfpack lead. In all, Tiger pitchers walked seven batters and hit another one to add to the 16 hits, which turned out to be too much for the Clemson offense to overcome.

Following a day off Thursday, Clemson faces No. 6 seed Virginia Tech at 4 p.m. Friday and finishes round-robin play with No. 3 Georgia Tech at 4 p.m. Saturday.
