Hero: Clemson student saves lives, animals in house fires

by - Assoc. Editor -

The definition of a hero is a person who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities.

The latest example of a hero is Clemson student Hunter Calvert, who saved multiple lives last Wednesday when several homes on Sumter Way in Charleston went up in flames.

The 20-year-old Calvert was relaxing in his family's hot tub when he saw his neighbor's house on fire.

He jumped into action, putting his own life in danger.

"He was shirtless. He had shorts on and no shoes, and he banged on the door, and he came out, and he was trying to use our hose in the backyard, and I told him to go around front and try to hook up there because it was closer to the fire,” his neighbor Lauren Wexler told WCBD 2 News. "He saved my life and our cats, and I couldn’t be more thankful for him."

At another property, Calvert saved several more people, including a baby and a few dogs.

City officials are still investigating the cause of the fire, but multiple neighbors said someone was burning trash that sparked the incident.

As a Clemson alumnus, I am proud of Hunter and appreciate his sense of community, bravery, and love for his neighbors.
