Reeves, Martin to serve as honorary captains vs. Troy

by -

Clemson, S.C.—Former Clemson players of the 1970s Marion Reeves and Peanut Martin will serve as honorary captains for the Tigers for the home opener against Troy on Saturday afternoon.

Both hold prominent places in the Clemson football history. Reeves was Clemson’s first African American football player, and Martin was the first African American to earn All-ACC honors for the Tiger football squad.

Reeves letter for the Tigers from 1971-73 as a defensive back. He had four interceptions in 1971 to tie for the team lead and two of them came in the final game of the season, a 17-7 victory at South Carolina. He started seven games in 1973 before suffering a season ending injury against N.C. State.

Martin was also known for his interceptions. He had eight in his career to rank ninth in Clemson history when he finished playing. In 1973 as a sophomore, Martin earned first-team All-ACC honors. He had five interceptions to rank second in the ACC. He had two of those, plus 64 punt return yards against Wake Forest that year.

After missing all but one game in 1974 due to a broken leg against NC State, Martin came back to start every game as a senior in 1975.

Additionally, Head Coach Dabo Swinney has announced that his captains for the game will be quarterback Nick Schuessler, tight end Jordan Leggett, defensive back Cordrea Tankersley and punter Andy Teasdall.
