Adam Smotherman enters his second year as a full-time strength coach at Clemson. Smotherman worked previously as the Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning at Furman University from 2012-2013 alongside Director David Abernethy. At Furman, Smotherman oversaw all aspects of training for thirteen of Furman’s sixteen varsity sports, and assisted with three other sports. Prior to his tenure at Furman, Smotherman was the graduate assistant coach for football strength training at Clemson from 2011-2012, a campaign which saw the Tigers win the ACC Championship. Before coming to Clemson, Smotherman interned in the weightroom for Dwight Galt at Vanderbilt University in the winter of 2011.

Smotherman is Strength and Conditioning Coach Certified (SCCC) by the CSCCa, a Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) by the NSCA, a Level 1 Sports Performance Coach certified through USA Weightlifting, and a Certified Tsunami Barbell Specialist. Smotherman earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education and History from Vanderbilt and is nearing completion of a Master of Science degree in Youth Development Leadership from Clemson.

Smotherman, a native of Smyrna, TN and graduate of Smyrna High School, was a four-year letterman at defensive tackle for Vanderbilt, where his strength and conditioning coach was John Sisk. Under Sisk's tutelage, Smotherman earned the team's Ironman Lineman Award three times, the Lifter of the Year Award two times, the Dedication Award, and was elected team co-captain his senior year.

Smotherman is married to the former Lindsey Whitworth of Columbia, SC.
