Mike Bellamy Bellamy was sent back to Clemson by Clemson head coach
Dabo SwinneyDabo Swinney No chance says Binky Waldrop. Waldrop, Bellamy’s head coach while he was at Charlotte (Punta Gorda, Fla.) High School, told TigerNet Monday evening that he talked to the mercurial freshman three different times over the Christmas break, and during each conversation Bellamy said he was still a Clemson Tiger. “He told me he wanted to go back to Clemson and take advantage of the second chance he had been given,” Waldrop said. “He told me there was never any other thought in his mind, and that he wanted to be a Clemson Tiger.” Bellamy appeared in 12 games this season, carrying 57 times for 343 yards and three touchdowns, but was sent out of one practice early by Swinney and struggled with his lack of playing time behind starter
Andre EllingtonAndre Ellington Waldrop said he also envisioned that Bellamy might want a change. “I thought maybe when I talked to him that he would tell me he wanted to go somewhere else,” Waldrop said. “But there was no hesitation from him. He knew exactly where he wanted to be, and that was in Clemson.” Waldrop said that his former star tried to avoid a conversation with him, but he finally got the chance to sit down with him. “He semi-dodged me, but that was to be expected,” he said. “I saw him twice and then talked to him another time on the phone. I really didn’t give him any advice other than what I have already been telling him for the last two years – telling him to be patient and to always put the team ahead of yourself and to listen to the coaches.” Waldrop said Bellamy showed remorse over his mistake. “He did, and hopefully this is a growing process for him,” he said. “I am sure he understands he made a mistake and will be better for this.”
