with these World Cup "best in the world" teams....
if they took the goalies off the field entirely, what do you think the average score would be? 10? 20 goals?
as boring as I think soccer is, I'd probably tune in to watch a 20-19 game.

eliminating the offside trap? would that mean fewer 'breaks'? it might mean more 'scoring chances', but so would shortening the field.
idk. it's really hard to watch and yet, i love a pitcher's duel in baseball.

watch a pitcher's duel.
It really boils down to if you know the sport, either formally played it, or something.

Why do Americans need to like Soccer anyway?

If people don't like it, then they don't like it. Getting rid of goalies or doing away with offsides would ruin the the game.
The only thing wrong with soccer is that there are too many ties.

How do you figure scoring more points = more entertaining?

Is Basketball your favorite sport?
And there are only usually 4 - 8 scores a game in football, they just count more.

brought on by shortening the fences, juicing the ball, lowering the pitcher's mound, allowing walking, palming, holding on the offensive line... all go toward increased scoring and appeasing the mob's need for those moments of jubilation.

forfeits their right to complain about a boring sport. If you watch golf, then you probably hate soccer out of ignorance. Though it is easy to hate soccer for legit reasons... like the frequent number of ties and non-aggressive strategy.

I have found most of the people that hate soccer in the south also enjoy watching hunting on TV.

Well, teasing the mobs allows for more intense climaxes. :)

That explains why soccer highlights are the best. The most amazing plays happen in soccer. It truly is the most beautiful sport.
But my favorite sport is American football because of the strategy and the violence. Not because of the scoring though.

soccer 'matches' for the violence factor; might up watchability?
i think you're right about the violence factor in football; it's a land acquisition game and hopefully 'our' team doesn't have spud in the dbackfield selling real estate.
nascar has it with wrecks, even a bench clearing brawl gets people 'edgy' in a good way.
soccer might be a beautiful sport's competition, but so are figure skating and synchronized swimming; they're just not tv time for me.

Comparing soccer to figure skating and swimming is bogus

Soccer involves people actively trying to stop you. Sports that don't involve defense are boring to me. Basketball sucks because there are way too many fouls and defense is usually a joke. Hockey, Football, Soccer and baseball gets special permission because of the strategy and the fact it is so hard to create offense. Plus tension builds a lot in certain moments of baseball games.
Defense is so good in soccer that it takes feats of brilliance to overcome it. That's my personal reasoning.

aesthetic.
the size of the field is a huge factor imo and the game is pretty linear which means it's not the defense imo, it's the game design.
take the same game indoors, to smaller field, upping scoring opps and you've got a slug fest.
i enjoyed playing it, nothing pleasing to me in watching it and i do 'get the game.'
i do see where you or others could enjoy it, just not for me.
