This won't take 1000 words, so I'll probably be disqualified.
Question: What is wrong with the Clemson football program? Answer: It doesn't meet the expectations of message board fans. Question: What are the expectations of message board fans? Answer: I'll let Lou Holtz answer that.
Lou Holtz: Back when I was a young coach, I got my first HC job at a small school that hadn't had a winning season in 20 years and was coming off a season with zero wins. The AD, the president and the head of the boosters told me, "We know we aren't paying you much, but it's all we can afford. All we expect is for you to be competitive."
We went 3-7. I was called into the office for my year end review. I was expecting at least a good review and was hoping for a raise. The same three men met me and said, "Look, when we said 'be competitive' we meant 'win'."
The next year we went 7-3, best season in school history. Going into the office this time I was sure I was going to get an extension and a raise. They said, "You don't understand. When we said 'win' we meant 'Win 'em all!' "
So, in my 4th year when we went 10-0 I nearly strutted into the office, knowing I was going to get an extension AND a nice raise. The three men asked me to sit down. The head of the boosters said, "You still don't understand. When we said, 'Win 'em all' we meant, 'Win 'em all.....BIG!!' "
Those three guys are typical of folks who post on football message boards.
