11 day trip from Munich

3

Jul 17, 2023, 1:22 PM

Anybody been to Munich and surrounding areas with their family? We found some last minute flight deals, but unsure if we want to go crazy with travel, or stick to a few key cities.

My kids are geography and history buffs and want to see a bunch of countries, but I'd rather not change cities every night. Kids requests are to see Venice and Liechtenstein (they like the name).

My wife and I want to conquer the world, but know that our best family vacations have been a little slower speed.

Any recommendations on travel, cities, car/train/hotels?

You can also go to that castle and push tourists into the ravine.

I've never actually been but my daughter has.

Sounds like what we should do at Myrtle and Charleston

And weisswurst isn’t for everyone, but have some with suss senf (sweet, dark brown mustard). Did a third reich tour in Munich, as well. Was actually really cool and informative. It was a full day with dinner afterwards. I forget the name of the market there, but definitely worth checking out.

And drink tons of beer.

From their website, doesn't appear there is a lot to do ...

11 days might be too much.

Cleanest subway in Munich I've ever seen.

I visited twice during October fest and once during Christmas. Visit the site of the 72 Olympics.

Great places to visit near there (few hours away by train): Prague, Vienna, Milan, Lucerne.

ce stores ones. The standalone strip mall ones are typically the worst maintained in my experience.

My wife and I went in 2019. We had a blast.

That was pre-kids. I wanted to squeeze as many cities in as possible but we scaled things down at my wife's request. She was right.

There is so much to see that you will have plenty to do. I believe we were there nine days or so. Flew in and out of Munich and traveled everywhere by train.

We had a few days in Munich to start. For a family with an interest in history, in city, check out: -Marienplatz: touristy but must do.
-English Gardens (including Chinese Beergarden): nice stroll and you can watch people surf in a river.
-All of the various palaces and art museums.
-A guided trip to Dachau. We went with Radius tours and I would highly recommend it.
-Walk through the Victualeinmart and get some food.
-Depending on kids' ages, hit up the various beirgartens and Hofbrauhaus. The beer really was better in Germany.

We travelled to Salzburg, which is gorgeous. It is a very scenic and easy train ride from Munich. We did the Sound of Music tour. While somewhat cheesy, it is a good way to see the Austrian lake district and outlying towns. This may not appeal to kids. The tram and tour to the top of the mountain was pretty cool. The city is noticeably smaller than Munich and very walkable. More good gardens, churches, etc. with a lot of Mozart stuff. More excellent breweries.

We stayed in Fussen and toured the castles. I wasn't excited for that because I viewed it as too touristy. I was dead wrong. They are absolutely incredible. I do wish the tours were longer though. We also rented bikes and biked around the lake. You can walk on a boardwalk into the Austrian mountains. It is a nice, small town. It was very outdoorsy.

Our last town was Rothenberg. It was very different than the others but still beautiful. We did the night watchman tour, which kids might like. We also visited some of the Christmas markets.

If you are interested in more details, let me know and I'll try to find them in my email. I think we used AirBNB on all hotels/lodging and never had a problem. We found the Rick Steve's guidebook to be most helpful for what we wanted.

I have been to Venice (and Vienna) on other trips. Both are great cities but you would spend days in either. i would say stick closer to Munich for this trip.

The one downside was the food. German food got very old

by the end of the trip. We found ourselves going to Italian and Turkish restaurants because we were tired of schnitzel, sausage, and potatoes.

Gotta disagree with you on the food. Was stationed there

and still miss eating the traditional German cuisine.

And it's a really neat city, but wasn't too impressed since not Octoberfest.

I'd take a train down to Grindenwald, Switzerland. It's pretty this time of year. From there you can take a day trip to Jungfraujoch and get your snow ski on. You will freeze, and be gasping for air if you walk fast. And the lakes around Interlaken are an amazing shade of blue from glacial melt.

“The Redneck version of Munich”

“The Redneck version of Munich”
Reviewed July 26, 2010
What does Panama City, FL, New Orleans,LA, and Helen,GA have in common? The same tacky tee shirt shops selling the same tacky clothing and knives. The only reason they sell knives is maybe that they sell tee shirts about hunting, beer, and babes. Helen is a Redneck's version of what Munich, Germany is supposed to look like. All buildings have by building code, the national roof color of Germany, dark red, shutters of some shape, and gingerbread face boards on the fronts. The back of these stores are not required to be decorated.

Unlike Munich, Berlin, even Atlanta, GA 90 miles to the south, most of the restaurants are closed by 9:00. The pubs stop selling bar foods like french fries, and deep fried candy bars. The pubs do serve drinks and karaoke until the wee mornings, except when Saturday turns into Sunday. There isn't much in the way of "fine" dining except for La Piazza on Chattahoochee Street. For that one needs reservations and a good pair of pants.

However, Helen does have one saving grace that makes it worth the look. There are several shops offering very high quality Bavarian made imported goods such as music boxes, clocks, steins, jewelry, and other consumer goods from Germany. There are also several mid to high quality hand made art shops offering locally made jewelry, pottery, wood working, and paintings. These are the things we went for.

The city is crowded during the summer with people proud to display their obesity, and lack of higher education. And even more crowded during Octoberfest, rated as one of the best in the world.

So give it a look; Helen deserves it, but don't judge the town based on the people walking the streets.

Even if just flying in - I’d suggest a day trip to Neuschwanstein Castle***
