170 - Dabo Currently has Earned 170 Wins as Clemson Head Coach

The greatest Clemson coach of all time owns 170 Clemson wins – and counting. William Christopher “Dabo” Swinney took the lead for most Clemson wins on November 4, 2023, with Clemson’s win over #12 Notre Dame. That victory gave him win #166, which was one more than Clemson legend Frank Howard.
Before Clemson
Dabo attended Alabama from 1988-1992. He was a walk-on for Alabama’s football team; however, he references himself as being a “crawl-on.” He claims he was actually a step below “walk-on” level.
[One of my favorite Dabo stories:]
Dabo’s football story almost ended abruptly at Bama, however. Dabo relied on Pell Grants for his tuition and his rent. When his dad was late sending Dabo his tax return information that was needed for the Pell Grants, Bama told Dabo that he had one day to pay half his tuition. As stated on TigerNet, Dabo, said:
“I didn’t have half my tuition even though tuition was only about $1100 per semester back in those days. So I needed about $550 or $600 right then. I didn’t have that, it might as well have been $6 million.”

Dabo called his Mom. She cried. Dabo told his Mom he would come home for a semester and work. More tears. Dabo’s college career was on the brink of disaster.
Dabo kept his faith in Christ. He prayed.
With his college career in jeopardy, Dabo found something unexpected in his mailbox. He found two perforated checks at the bottom of a letter from Discover. Puzzled, Dabo called Discover knowing that he had not applied for a Discover card or account. He thought it might have been a scam.
The Discover representative told him that he had been granted a Discover card as part of their new Good Students Program. According to the same TigerNet article:
“‘What? You mean I have a credit card?’ And she said yes, that I was part of the good student program. I said you are telling me I can write these checks for whatever I need them for? And, she said yes, just like they were regular checks, but only up to your regular credit limit. And I asked about that and she said, ‘One thousand dollars.’ And that all happened in a span of about 15 minutes, from talking to my mom and I am in tears to finding that money.”
“That was one of my moments early in life when I knew God had his hand on me and was in control.”

Dabo’s college career continued.
After his playing days, Dabo stayed at Bama as an assistant – until Bama Head Coach Mike Dubose was released, which left Dabo without a job.
He began real estate development. The money was good. But his heart was in coaching!
Clemson:
Former Bama assistant Tommy Bowden brought Dabo to Clemson in 2003. As WR coach, Dabo quickly became a favorite among players.
Dabo attended a staff meeting one Monday morning. AD Terry Don Phillips walked in and announced three things:
1. Phillips was releasing HC Tommy Bowden - effective immediately.
2. Phillips was initiating a search for a new Clemson HC - effective immediately
3. Phillips was naming Dabo Head Coach until the search was concluded - effective immediately
At Dabo’s press conference he stated that he knew his chances of keeping the HC job were slim. But, he swore he was “All In.”
Dabo lost his first game as head coach against Ga Tech, but he won enough to be named head coach without the interim tag. He then lost his first game without the interim tag against Nebraska in the Gator Bowl.
He has not lost many games since!

Dabo has certainly delivered on that promise!
Dabo’s Head Coaching record is currently:
- Overall: 170-43 (.798 Average)
- ACC: 103-23 (.817 Average)
- Bowls: 12-8 (.600 Average)
- CFP: 6-4 (.600 Average)
Dabo’s record speaks for itself! That said, additional statistics are also impressive:
- 12 Straight Double-Digit Seasons (2011-2022)
- 9 Major Bowl Appearances (Orange (4), Fiesta (2), Sugar (2), Cotton (1))
- 8 ACC Championships
- 6 Straight CFP appearances
- 3 Heisman Finalists (2 #2 finishes; 1 #3 finish)
Meanwhile, Dabo has created a culture of family that places priority on people. He wants his players to develop as players and as young men – athletically, academically, and professionally.
A man who is passionate about his faith and about people. Clemson’s players are fortunate to have Dabo as coach – just as we fans are fortunate to have him as head coach!
Only one word to say:
- ELITE!
Clemson fans everywhere (yes, even those in Spartanburg) owe Dabo a huge debt of gratitude! Thank you, Coach Swinney! From all of us!

South Carolina Highway 170 is a 49.01 mile mostly four-lane state highway that starts on the northeast end at US 21 Business in Beaufort and travels to the southwest end at the Georgia state line in Port Wentworth, connecting Beaufort and Jasper counties.
 
Back to random colleges. Spartanburg Methodist is a private Methodist college in Saxon, South Carolina. It was founded in 1911 as the Textile Industrial Institute and moved to it's present 110 acre campus in 1913. It became a junior college in 1927, Spartanburg Junior College in 1942 and Spartanburg Methodist College in 1974. Bachelor's degree programs started in 2019 and the college now has about 1,000 students in 6 associate and 5 bachelor's degree programs. The sports teams, the Pioneers, have been a member of the NJCAA, but will join the NAIA in the Continental Athletic Conference this coming fall. Notable alumni include Lee Haney, Mookie Wilson, Reggie Sanders, and Dwight Smith.
