2022 Wide Receivers

Dec 30, 2021, 12:11 PM

With all the difficulties we had this year, we sure seem thin next year at WR. I see the Collins boys and Ngata/Williams (don't think you can count on more than one being available at a time), plus whatever we might get from Taylor/Spector/Stellato and two true freshmen. We seem short handed to me even without injuries. May need to explore the portal here.

Also, there seems to be a lack of speed at WR. We can't run away from anyone. This is one of my primary areas of concern for 2022.

We'll probably add Cole Turner in some capacity and look toward the '23 class.

Our WR play in 2021 has been a disappointment for sure, especially in terms of the drops and lack of ability or desire to block or be physical. Thinking most of that has to do with inexperience and lack of development, physically and mentally.

For example, Ajou has great size and apparent physical talent but doesn't appear to want to be physical in any way, at least football physical. Apparently didnt have the ability to adequately grasp the plays either. Never having played football growing up made that leap to big time D1 WR way too much for him. He was a recruitment reach that, at the time, we thought we could do without much trouble and let him develop. Didnt turn out that way.

Ladson was another big miss. Should have been better but never could stay healthy and, quite frankly, never really seemed interested in playing.

Ngata, another 5 star from Cali who's not panned out, injury prone as well. I was at the game last night and DJ threw a WR screen to him and the ball wasn't perfect but it probably could have been caught - with better effort. That seems to be a constant there, injuries and effort.

EJ Williams - dont know, been hurt and inconsistent when he plays.

Point is - not sure if these are all just recruiting misses or development issues within our progam? I would tend to think it's recruiting misses as the two Collins kids have done well with similiar opportunities. Regardless, we have 2 SC kids coming in to help so let's see if some local talent with superior coaching can catch us back up. That plus the fact that the TX QB may give us a dynamic we havent had at QB might be just the ticket to get our offense back on track in 2022.

Adam Randall is a star

The Collins twins(not really) Beaux and Dacari. EJ Williams unless is a game changing type dude. He was a young guy with Trevor last year. This year injuries got him. Next season with good QB play I expect him to blow up and be our #1 target.
Then you add the cat-quick Will Taylor in the slot.

Will Ngata play and be healthy? Many other CU WR's didn't blossom until that senior season; could this be the case with him? I think it could.

Brannon Spector - hopefully comes back healthy! Experience and really good hands over the middle. Hoping he or Taylor take over that Rodgers/Renfrow/Humphries role.

Zach Jackson - long body!

Love the Collins boys. Hopefully the freshman coming in are special.

What about Joseph, or is he a '23?

Don’t sleep on Adam Randall…

Dec 30, 2021, 1:03 PM

He has size and speed and will contribute as a true freshman.

Check out this video at the ON3 camp going on right now. I get a single rep in a camp isn’t the end all be all but this is against 5* Kamari Wilson and you can clearly see the burst at a minimum.

The CU starters will be elite. But, how much depth will be a concern.

Development has to speed up and guys have to be ready to play sooner. As you said, Mr. Randall may be forced to come in and contribute early even if he isn't ready. His speed and size are elite already. Biggest help they can get though is an accurate QB and a OL that gives that accurate QB time to go through progressions.

A big help to any passing offense is if you can keep the defense from setting up to stop the pass! I.E. if we can run the football when teams drop 8 we force them to match up with our wr's 1 on 1. I like our chances in a 1 on 1 to make the catch or get an interference call. The QB just has to give them a reasonable opportunity to make a play and not air mail it or short hop it.

I am not overly concerned at the moment at the WR position at all.
