By my count we have one scholarship left. Does XT or Ngata come back? Maybe neither.

That 85 number doesn't have to be exact until August.
For the first time, Clemson may be in a position that if they lose a player or 2 to the portal after spring practice that it doesn't drop a handful of players below that 85 number.
Having more than 85 on campus is a problem but not all of those 26 commits will be here in the spring.
The numbers will work out and for once Clemson isn't sitting near 80 heading into the spring semester.

NIL question

Are we obsolete with our thinking on the 85 number? Couldn’t a player be classified as a preferred walkon and be given NIL money to cover the scholarship expenses?

That's certainly an option...

but how many preferred walk-ons are going to be considered for NIL deals unless it's a Miami-type scenario where all players at certain positions receive an annual NIL payment?

I am thinking that if both XT and Ngata want to stay and the team is over 85 scholarships. The preferred walk on with NIL could be a work around. I believe the richer schools will also use the workaround to stockpile players.

girl,
I wondered the same thing awhile back. Give a starter $80K NIL with the understanding that he will lose his scholarship and have to spend NIL money on tuition, room and board. With good NIL support, a team could carry 100 scholarship quality athletes on its roster.

If they fall under a Covid year of eligibility does the 85 still apply or is that over?

COVID years (6th year players) don't count against the 85 scholarship limit so may not even be an issue.

I believe there was a one-year grace period based on taking the covid year but think that has lapsed so the covid year guys would count toward the 85 total.

Yeah I think you're right.

If I was someone who made $11M annually and coached football, my son would not use a scholarship bc I would keep that scholarship free for someone who needs it more. And with the NIL, I’d create a few Shell-corp LLCs to funnel my own money into NIL Collectives. I’d rather get paid $9M and give $2M-$3M annually to ensure I can pay good players to join/remain on the team (and ensure I keep my job).

I'm sure you'd also not hire all your best buddies as coordinators and assistants. Power corrupts some people. A decade-long tenure does wonders for that.

Hate to break it to you, but if a player takes the field in an NCAA football game they MUST count against the 85-scholarship limit, whether they are on a scholarship or not, and regardless of how their stay there is funded. Them's the rules.

Is that really true? I always thought the 85 limit was for scholly players only and you could carry as up to a certain number of walk-ons/preferred walk-ons.

Do you not recall the multitude of games that we had 100+ players participate? How were all 100+ on scholarship?
Walk-ons play all the time...

I think you are confusing this with a different rule. If you play football, and are on scholarship, you have to count against the 85 football scholarships. Meaning, you cannot be on a baseball scholarship and play football (see Will Taylor for example).
But, you do not have to be on scholarship at all to participate in the game.

You don't have to be on a scholarship to play, but apparently in order to play you have to count towards that limit. I had come across this a while back over a debate over a Swinney kid being on the team and taking up a spot. Haven't looked at the actual NCAA rules on it.

No. If a football player is on any kind of scholarship, including academic, he must count against the 85 limit. The reason for this rule is that certain schools would give a 300 pound defensive lineman a swimming scholarship, knowing that he would never get in the pool and indeed might not even know how to swim.
A player on an academic scholarship who is on the football team as a scout team walk-on does not count against the 85. But he must be included in the 85 before he can play in a game. That's the only limited exemption.
There is also a pecking order of sports. A football player on scholarship can play basketball or baseball or run on the track team without counting against those sports' limits. A basketball player can compete in the high jump without counting against the track limit, but again he can't play football unless he's on the list of 85.
I might be reading more into this. It does reference an academic scholarship as mandating inclusion, but not necessarily not being on any type of scholarship at all, i.e. paying their own way.
I likely stand corrected here.

"A player on an academic scholarship who is on the football team as a scout team walk-on does not count against the 85. But he must be included in the 85 before he can play in a game. That's the only limited exemption."
This means that a player on academic scholarship can be part of the team and not count against 85 as long as he doesn't play in games. But if he plays in a game, then he must count against the 85 limit. That is in place to prevent teams from trying to circumvent the rule and sneak other players in, academically, and going over the 85 limit.
If a player isn't on any type of scholarhip at all, he can play in the game and not count against the 85. Again, that's how we play >85 in blowouts and get our walk-ons some 4th-quarter playing time. Well, that's how we USED to do that...haven't had many of those opportunities lately.

Based on the list TNET just posted, Swinney isn't on scholarship.

We can be over, and I'm pretty sure we will be after XT, Ruke, Ngata and TD decide. Also, are you still on scholarship if you are a graduate? Does that still count against it?
