A fact about Jack Leggett

Jun 4, 2015, 11:59 PM

Jack Leggett stands for and demonstrates true commitment to his word. In the end, this trait probably lended to his demise. It certainly appears that Jack was given the opportunity to make 'changes' in his program and remain at the helm. Standing true to his word Jack did not buckle and his tenure came to an end.

In talking to players past and present, each one noted that Coach Leggett set a standard for them to achieve and he lived that standard. One thing many may not know, is that in the new world of college baseball, schools are getting commitments from players as early as their freshman year in high school. This time frame and trend puts a tremendous amount of pressure on a coach to project correctly as to whether this youngster will progress during his high school career. "Over committing" is a term that has become standard in the industry. This term basically means that a school will 'commit' 20 players for only 10 spots (I use those numbers as an example). Many other schools will then 'cull' the weakest athletes shortly before or once they get on campus. Letting them know that plans had changed and they would be redshirted or would not get the playing time they had hoped and that after the first year the scholarship would probably not be honored. The coaches then work with junior colleges or other programs to help 'farm out' these athletes who have made true to their commitments but find that the feelings were not mutual. From all accounts that I know, Clemson and Jack Leggett stood by the commitments to these student athletes, even if it meant not having enough meat at the table to bring in others to help the program.

What Jack Leggett taught his players is something that we would all want our children to be taught.

There will always be a boss, and the boss will always be right even when they are wrong. They are giving out lots of money for coaches these days, and when a coach won't perform the duties that was handed down by their bosses, lots of money can and most of the time will be lost by the coach. And it doesn't matter if the coach has been arond 50 years!!!
