UCLA, after 47 years, finally able....

Dec 28, 2021, 7:50 PM

......to get back at NC State for beating them in Greensboro and ending their 7 year title run in the NCAA Tournament. Talk about holding a grudge.....

The Bruins did beat the Wolfpack in basketball a couple of times in the 90s. Btw, I still think David Thompson was one of the greatest athletes ever in any sport. At about 6'4" and 200 lbs, he just seemed to have a perfect athletic body and had a 40"+ vertical. He would probably have excelled in football if he had chosen to go that route. As a kid in the 70s, I was amazed watching him play. NC State had a little guard, Monte Towe, whose job was to get the ball down the court and keep feeding it to Thompson and occasionally that skinny 7 foot center they had. Sadly, like a lot of great athletes, DT let drugs ruin his pro career where he could have been better than Jordan and James.

Tom Burleson. Held his own against Bill Walton in that game. David Thompson was great. Towe was a pesty player.

Remember all of them. I was way ahead of my Tiger time…..10 years old….born and raised in NC….I was pulling for UCLA.

I will say, the 74 NCSU vs Maryland ACC Championship game is still the greatest bball game I’ve ever seen. 60 minutes of bball heart attack.

Agree. That was a game I didn't want to end.

About a month and a half after that John Lucas won the #1 flight of ACC singles tennis tourney. Heck of an athlete. Watched him play as it was at Clemson that year

most of the points that year. Great team. The best game of the year was the ACC Championship game with Maryland. Before there were at-large bids. Possibly the second best team didn't get into the tournament.

David Thompson was unbelievable. When I was in HS I attended basketball camps at the Citadel. They opened camp on Sunday night with an all star exhibition game. Saw Tree Rollins, Stan Rome, and David Thompson play in those games. Thompson had a breakaway dunk and shattered the backboard. This was either 1978 or 1979 - way before anyone ever heard of Darryl Dawkins. One of my HS teammates grabbed a piece of glass and kept it as a souvenir.

I'm pretty sure dunking wasn't allowed when Thompson played college ball. Did they call a technical foul?

It was but I don't remember the specifics. I'm wanting to say they could drop the ball in as long as they didn't touch the rim.

On another note, David Thompson was the first I ever heard of taking a dollar off the top of the backboard and leaving 4 quarters change.

That story about taking a dollar and leaving change is one of those urban legends that's been applied to many of the great basketball leapers. I even remember that being said about "Jumpin" Murray Jarman at Clemson.

The other measurement of leap is the money exchange at the top of the backboard, which is exactly 13 feet above the floor and three feet above the rim.

This is where we get into sword-and-stone mythology.

Legends abound of the truly great leapers who could touch the top of the board. Almost always the feat involves money--claims that the player could grab a dollar bill off the top of the board, or could pluck off a quarter and leave two dimes and a nickel change. Spencer Haywood, for one, claims to have been to the top.

“I defy anyone to say they took change off the top of the backboard,” Chamberlain said. “I could. Someone would put a quarter up and I’d ###### it down.

“I’ve heard stories about Jackie Jackson doing it, but I’ve never seen anyone (but himself) come close.”

BB team at State. Shortly after David enrolled, Norm Sloan came to my friend and "suggested" he might want to drop basketball and concentrate on his studies. One of the many Thompson shot out of the saddle I'm sure.

Why do dogs always race to the door when the doorbell rings? It's almost never for them.
