A Tidal Wave on the Horizon (Long)
Jun 27, 2012, 6:06 PM
|
|
As many of you know I am a very passionate Tiger fan. I live and die Clemson and I have since my first game in 1972 at the tender age of 7. I say with pride and no apologies that "there is something in those hills."
I have given to IPTAY since I graduated. IPTAY was the gold standard in raising money in college sports in the 70's and 80's. Everyone wanted to copy us because we raised so much money. That money kept Clemson a viable program. Begining in 1940 with a Sugar Bowl win, Clemson's sports and football program slowly expanded and grew. We acquired a stadium, we expanded, and we kept growing. By 1983 we had the largest stadium between "Birmingham and Philadelphia." We raised more than USuC in any given year. Period.
Loyalty was a big part of giving. You could be low or high on the financial scale but your love for Clemson shone though with donations that helped the Tigers compete and move forward. We reaped in the late 70's and 80's. Then came the dark ages after DF.
Things changed as the 90's turned into the 2000's. Corporate giving began to overtake booster giving in CFB. TV contracts could mean more than all your boosters combined. So, here we are--2012 and we are all still willing to give--but what IPTAY does--while significant--is a drop in the bucket to TV contracts and corporate sponsorships. Because of this Clemson, in the conference it is in, cannot continue to compete financially in the coming years at the high level it maintained for so many years before. Now USuC is ahead and the gap is growing. Period.
Some of you are in denial: Just win. It will all work itself out. ACC is the best. BLAH, BLAH, BLAH. But I feel like a citizen of Atlantis looking out at that huge tidal wave of money that our rivals will get and knowing it is going to sink my beautiful city.
You might not believe it but . . . Clemson has a math problem and NO ONE is offering a solution of how to solve it in the ACC. (Just win. Okay. We win but USuC reaps 8 million more than us even though they lost to us. And they can spend millions to redo the Farmer's Market to make it more like the special green spaces we enjoy in Clemson and attact more and more to its product (which I hate). See-this is where this is all going.)
I am not happy about it and I just don't see much leadership addressing it right now. Are we avoiding legal issues? I hope our BOT really has not stopped looking for the best financial and other deal for Clemson. They cannot fail us at this moment to secure Clemson's future. I just don't see how the ACC can be the most viable solution at the moment.
I love my Tigers and I have to hope that "things will work out" as many of you say or believe. But even an Atlantean would have hoped such things as he watched the giant civilization-ending wave approach his beautiful city.
JMHO.

there are too many people who believe that College Football is cyclical or that we can continue compete with Usuc because "we hold the overall record".
The reality is it can no longer be a cycle, because whats happening now has never been seen before in major college football.
Last year Usuc's AD made $22 million more than we did, if you were a regular business and your nearest competitor made that much more than you, you wouldn't even be able to survive.

sport's revenues; lots of olympic sports.
the big, public state universities and a few others have dominated these figures if simply for living alumni.
there are those schools such as notre dame that are unworldly.

but I've always labored under the belief that all those Olympic sports were a huge drain on an athletic department's budget---I mean they don't bring in any revenue.. I don't know how much of UVa's huge endowment they're allowed to use for sports if any, but I do know that UVa has a ton of wealthy, professional alums many of whom come from old money and I doubt they have a great deal of difficulty raising money (when absolutely necessary) for the "minor" sports.......great example is obviously baseball

baseball is a revenue sport '76 or am i misunderstanding?

and yes, i was at a uva football game a number of years ago when an alumnus challenged uva with a $27mil donation as long as it was matched by the university and other donors.
the money went directly into sport's facility upgrades. if uva ever got their act together, they would be a very tough program. welsh had them well on their way and it looked like groh was a strong hire, unfortunately for uva, he was a one coach wrecking crew.

Its not ticket sales, not TV contract, what is it? Has this been consistent, or is this an anomoly?

I prefer to think like this: Money is not going to change everything as much as people think. If it did, Texas or Oregon or some school from Calif. would win the NC every year. The TV market can only handle so much college football. After that, viewership goes down. Advertisers ain't happy. It's all going to collapse. I have no doubt. That is why Clemson needs to stay the course. Continue to improve in providing a high quality education and seeing that kids graduate. These are the schools that will survive. NOT SCHOOLS THAT ARE MAKING A MONEY GRAB.

UVA at 25th. Why ain't they a top football school? Money ain't everything. There are other schools making big bucks that aren't doing so well either. Why not?

If you are pointing out that there are exceptions to the rule, then yeah, okay. But how many of the past 10 National Champions are not in the top 10 in revenue? ONE (Southern Cal @ 26).
Having more money doesn't guarantee a national championship, or even a good football team, but it's hard to have one without it. Surely you see that?

I am seriously concerned that one day I'll be telling my future kids "back when I went to Clemson we had a big time football program." That possibility would have NEVER crossed my mind just a few years ago, but today it seems more and more likely.
