ACC Fencing?

Feb 27, 2022, 3:21 PM

I noticed this sport on the conference website. I don't know much about fencing. Are they talking picket or split rail? ;)

Clemson actually had a club fencing team back in the late 70s - early 80s. I think they won the national championship in 81.

there was a fencing club in '64.i was in it.coached by architecture prof. hal cooledge,a somewhat eccentric gentleman.only in it for 1 semester.found that practice was taking serious time away from my afternoon naps.what most people don't realize is that napping itself is a skill, and if not diligently practiced, that skill is easily lost.it all came down to priorities, and with that my sojourn into collegiate fencing came to a halt.

I had a friend and fraternity brother Steve Renshaw who was 2-3 years older than me who was a 4-time All-American fencer for Clemson back in the 1980-81 timeframe. A good man, a smart man and clearly one he11uva fencer. Clemson Hall of Fame (see attached).

They’re talking “foil” for one of them I think. I don’t know the others.

Big deal up here with the Golden Domers.

Back in the 70s and 80s, Clemson had a powerhouse fencing team. My brother, Mark Wasserman, fenced sabre for Clemson from 1978-1981. He was good friends with Steve Renshaw, mentioned in another comment on this thread. I fenced foil (maiden name was Deborah Wasserman) for the Clemson women's team 81-82 and then Clemson disbanded both men's and women's fencing teams. (but honored my scholarship, for which I will always be grateful). Most of the team was recruited from the Northeast (we were from NJ) which may have had something to do with the reason that it was disbanded. I have great memories of fencing for Clemson and remain a faithful Tiger fan to this day. (now a pediatrician in Columbia)

really sucks to this day that Clemson hasn't or didn't keep all of it's original sports that they have discontinued like Men's and Women's Fencing,Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving,Wrestling and Women's Field Hockey

Even if you’re a non-scholarship sport, you still have coaches’ salaries, transportation and logistics to force into a budget.

Very familiar with that crowd of Yankees

I was the armorer for the men’s team 77-79. Steve, Mark, Craig V. and the rest made up a heck of a team. Won the ACC and finished fourth in NCAA my last year.

Craig V. became the women's team coach in 81. He and Mark were great friends dating back to high school in NJ. Craig moved back to NJ and has done well. Mark is a lawyer in Atlanta, also doing very well. Time really does fly by!

My family lived in the Greenville area from ‘99-‘02.

One day I was driving by what is now Sportsclub—it used to be an event-hosting place—and saw a crowd of out-of-state vehicles in the parking lot, so I moseyed inside to see what was going on. Turned out to be a national fencing tournament being hosted.

There was no entrance fee, so I stayed and watched a while. The sport sure had improved the technology from the time in fenced for PE in college in ‘83. And I’m sure it’s even moreso now.
