ACC GOR

Aug 7, 2023, 4:03 PM

Just curious and wondering if anyone else knows the definite answer to this. Isn’t it true that if the ACC adds any school to the conference before the GOR ends, then the GOR would be null and void and any team can leave the conference if willing to. If that is the case, then adding the PAC-4 would be a great scenario for Clemson, fsu, miami, and unc. The ACC needs to be concerned about competing with the big12 and not the sec and big10. Obviously this scenario can only happen if adding teams voids the GOR. Anyone know for sure?

So I’ve learned over the last day or so that this is apparently not true

The new school would simply be required to sign the GOR, and then ESPN would NOT be required to renegotiate with the ACC on the broadcasting rights; effectively meaning each member school would be losing money because revenue would have to be split with the new school(s).

So what you are telling me is adding more school would be detrimental to the conference?

For Clemson, I’d think yes.

I mean in theory the ACC could try to renegotiate the deal with ESPN, but I’m not sure how Clemson (or any other ACC school) would come away with MORE money than they get now. Why would ESPN even want to renegotiate a sweet deal they have? No incentive.

The contract with ESPN does NOT increase the annual fee paid to the ACC conference for added members. Any money going to new members would be deducted proportionately from all existing members.
This varies dramatically from the latest Big12 contract with ESPN where ESPN raises their annual payment when new members are added. This explains why the 4 added schools know they will get the same $32million annually paid to the current Big12 members.
Factor this failing, plus the 20 year contract length plus the fact there is zero inflation protection over a 20 year term tells me the ESPN negotiators figuratively raped the ACC Commissioner and then the University Presidents that signed on. Nearly criminal they bought into this.
Lambs to slaughter.

ESECPN really just wants to see Clemson effed over. I’m now convinced of this.

I actually disagree. I would think ESPN wants Clemson in the SEC.***

That sounds like a great deal so where does Swofford sign ?

No it is not true

There's a specific paragraph in the GOR stating how new members are added.

you're referring to the previous version.

Substantially the same I would think, but who knows.

The 2016 re-work was precipitated because the League wanting a "network" to keep up with BiG and SEC with ESPN agreeing to create and broadcast the ACC network that the League coveted. One can imagine the Conference giving up more in this iteration than the original 2013 agreement. The 2013 version brought in the long term GoR commitment as at that point the ACC desperately sought stability and to lock in all members.
In both cases the ACC walked in on their knees when bargaining with the ESPN sharks.
Next time get better lawyers.
