ACC will never be the dominant Basketball conference it once was!

Dec 12, 2022, 5:07 AM

We brought in great traditional Big East schools expected to bolster the already Top Basketball Conference in all of NCAA. We had Cuse, Pitt Miami and Louisville, who were traditionally dome of the best in all college based on rankings. You know they played in a tougher conference and they were not as dominant but still good.

Couple yrs later they fell into the shoe money FBI story and they lost their top 5 recruiting classes. Then add in as the coaches go interviewed they also lost their jobs.

Now the ACC has lost the great coaches like Dean Smith, Roy W., Coach K, Petino, etc, etc.

Look at what conference has hired some of the best coaches recently - SEC. They are becoming very competitive. Look at which conference has average coaches-- ACC. The Big 10 is passing the ACC, the SEC has passed the ACC, and the PAC has been as good as ACC for several years.

With the new money coming to these conferences, almost double in some payouts. How can the ACC compete?

Clemson spent $63mil for basketball 3yrs ago and we still have a coach that hasn't changed 1 bit. We lose when we should not, we play a functional boring game even if we win, the coach doesn't connect with fans, and the diehards say we need fam participation.

Well guess what, beating a dead horse brings zero fans. Lets rejuvenate the product, lets make the product more exciting, let's win games we are supposed too, let's be competitive in games that are tough!!!

How can this administration expect fans to come watch games if there is a 50% chance we lose to a team that we should blow out. Clemson deserves better, fans deserve better!

Why spend $63mil to have a team that plays to have a . 500 record? Why do we give new contracts for a minimal number of NCAA appearances. Neff nerfs to step up and make our investments worth a return!

I miss coach K and others like Petrino that made the conference fun. Now it's a shell of the old ACC.

Just look at the last few NCAA Tournaments and you will see there is really no dominant conference. The 3 point shot has leveled the playing field in basketball. Make 3's you win.

Maybe this is our best chance of basketball success under the current administration...the rest of the conference continues its decline, and we just hold our own long enough that we're at the top!

Every college basketball team loses games it shouldn't.

Dec 12, 2022, 9:51 AM

You act like it's a Clemson problem. Have you looked around the country lately at other teams? Upsets galore.

I know it's frustrating to lose games we shouldn't, but if that's difficult for you then basketball might not be your sport.

Over the last five years, we've made the NCAA Tournament twice, including a Sweet 16 berth. Our average ACC finish during that span of time is 7th out of 15 teams. This is despite supporting basketball worse than almost everyone else in the ACC, and having a basketball history at or near the bottom of the ACC.

Can you imagine what Brownell could do with better support? Logic dictates that he would win more. Wouldn't it be great to provide that?

"Everybody needs to know that Coach Brownell is arguably the best coach to come through Clemson." -PJ Hall

The SEC is flush with cash and willing to hire guys with questionable morals like Bruce Pearl.

The $63M spent on basketball was only because the old building was a rust bucket and unsafe. Hardly any of that money was directed at enhancements for the players. Yes there were new locker rooms but those are not a differentiator from any good mid-major program.

Folks want a new bball coach but can Clemson afford to open the wallet for a top coach like they did for baseball and if they did would the top coach be willing to risk their at Clemson? Not sure we can afford to pour money into every sports program especially when many fans are at the walk away point given the current costs .

The ACC is literally coming off 2 of 4 FF teams last year

Dec 12, 2022, 2:10 PM

Another in EE. They outperformed the B10 and SEC in the tourney. They just won the ACC - B10 challenge. By the end of the year UNC and Duke will be rolling, UVA will be a deep tourney team and teams like UM and VT will be Sweet 16 type teams FSU was riddled with injuries or would have been up there. Teams like ND, NCSU, WF and CU have some potential but this BS Net stuff will probably limit the league to about 5 or 6 bids again - and then those teams will mow everyone down, just like last year.

I hear what you are saying. But those of us that are products of the 70s and 80s got to enjoy the ACC being simply dominant. Instead of the (now top heavy) ACC. the ACC back then was top to bottom - strong. JK and his cronies love to talk about Clemson finishing in 7-10 in todays ACC which is not strong and bragging. Back then, if you finished just below .500 in the ACC, you stood a good chance of getting an invite to the dance and .500 was almost guaranteed. I believe a .500 team from that era would challenge or win the current ACC.
Two different eras.
Nothing but memories unfortunately.
We recruited hard, played hard, competitive. We did not complain about the arena, the coaches compensation, etc. unlike today, Clemson basketball was exciting and students showed up.
Too many excuses and not enough performance, IMO.

Agree, our time was when we were actually good in all 3 of the major sports. We were blessed and somewhat spoiled at the same time. In '79-'80 our basketball team was 23-9 and made it to the West Region Final. In 1981, we won our first NC in football. In 1976, 1977 and 1980 baseball made it to the College World Series. Our men's soccer team was runner-up in the National Final in 1979 and won it in 1984.

Yes, we were definitely spoiled...

This is stupid. Cry Cry a river, the ACC will never be dominant. It seems you don't understand what lifecycle means. There is a point that YOU many never see the ACC as dominant as it once was. Your reasons about Clemson are NOT valid at all and it has nothing to do with what you list as prior reasons. What is valid is you lack of understanding what lifecycle means. There are variables that do change the environment that you have listed and it takes the knowledge to see these changes and to adapt to better oneself during this change.

Yes the ACC has lost great coaches: Dean Smith, Roy W., Coach K. With those moving on new coaches take their place and in time we can hope to have new legends arrive.

I was going to post something similar a few days ago.

Care to look at the NCAA Mens basketball current top 25?
I see it loaded with SEC teams. I wonder why that is?
Here is a little hint: $
