It used to seem like we could only land high star skill guys

Now it feels like we can get top lineman, QB and defense but can't land top receivers or RB. Really weird to me. Higgins and Ross were the last truly top receivers we've recruited imo

Agree. Jeff leaving didn't help out WR recruiting.***

Great point

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

We recruited and signed “top” WRs since then … but

3

Feb 23, 2023, 6:57 PM

they simply didn’t perform up to their ranking.

Ladson, Henderson, Ngata … all top national recruits that had multiple offers from the big programs.

Now, perhaps the last couple of years, the fact that we actually brought in top WRs and they left without becoming stars at Clemson has had some negative impact on our ability to recruit the top guys for the past couple of cycles.

Who knows?

We've done far more with far less, right?

The question is did we miss in evaluation. I don't know that that question can be answered without some sort of proof they played exponentially better post CU. It's either that or we have a problem developing WR's, which I have been concerned might be the case. Guessing we'll have answers this year though.

I definitely agree with BBO. Jeff leaving definitely had a negative effect on our WR room. I think development and evaluation both took a step back in the WR department. It is tough to judge how big of a step back it was with the QB play the past two years coupled with the fact that I think our offensive scheme just went stale after doing the same thing for years. Like BBO said we will have a better idea this year.

Off topic but another thing I worry about is our Dline not being able to get consistent pressure with just four down lineman. It makes a big difference

Did the power rangers spoil us?

I don't think so. Well, maybe a little, but no, they aren't the exception at Clemson. My homer "want" is to know that Wes and Nick both dig deep this off season to continuously improve. We had a lot of stuff go against us last season, especially with Brian, but I'm of the mind it's a focal point. We are skrong up the middle again this year so I'm hopeful that translates to improvement after a season with our new defensive staff.

I forget who Henderson was, remind me.

The only Henderson I can think of is Xavier Henderson. We missed on him in recruiting. He chose Florida over us

I meant EJ Williams. Sorry.

I understand your argument, just seems like we haven't had those clear Sammy, Higgins, Ross types. Maybe it's coaching, but even Ladson and Ngata didn't scream superstar to me.

Regardless you never know who is going to hit or not until they play. No hate on the staff just an observation of lacking All conference type receiver.

There's also been an issue with injuries. Ngata could break his foot on the 40 yard line. Beaux Collins injures easily as well, but he has shown to have tons of talent when healthy.

Beaux could be very good, correct. I'm just comparing them to the instant hits that are top guys in freshman/sophomore campaigns. Even Nuk wasn't highly recruited but shined as a freshman with Kyle Parker. Just odd we don't seem to find those guys anymore.

ain't putting that on WR's - poor route coaching and can't

6

Feb 23, 2023, 7:25 PM

catch a ball that bounces to you - WR will shine in 23.

We've had some past QBs who took some good WRs and made them great. I hope we have a couple more QBs on the roster now who will be able to do that.

Valid argument, maybe some of our WR would have shined like an Artavis or Amari with proper QB play.

it's Brent Venables , Dabo Swinney all over again

Feb 23, 2023, 9:37 PM

but this is an offense era

Garret Riley , Dabo Swinney will be where all the talent goes.

Jeff Scott is back too.
