Agreed. Episodes 1-4 are decent, but Episodes 5-8 are great...

I think you were correct, but I just stopped watching Real Detective season 4 after 4 or 5 episodes.
The plot was meandering, slow, and uninteresting, and for me these days, watching Jodie Foster act (much like Kevin Costner), has roughly the same effect as taking a quadruple dose of Ny-quil.
So if you wanna give the short and sweet "what happened to the guys at the station", I'd welcome the spoiler.

Main Story/Ending:
Group of the native women (remember the white girl with the missing fingers who worked at the plant that got beat up by her boyfriend/husband in the early episodes? Her too) find out that Annie (the dead girl) was killed by the scientists and that the scientists knowingly are poisoning the town's water so they attack the station and parade the scientists out into a blizzard to let nature (or Annie?) kill them.
Side story Spoilers:
The mean older male cop that works with Jodie Foster (and father to the young deputy) helped move Annie's body and is working for the corporation to cover up everything. He's killed by his son in a showdown at Foster's house.
Annie's tongue showing up is never resolved, nor are the supernatural questions.

And I find myself grateful for stopping when I did.
The compelling factor for this one just fell off a cliff compared to any of the others.

as I didn't watch them, but S4 certainly wasn't as compelling as S1 (although I thought both had similarly disappointing endings), imo.

It was god awful and a disservice to the True Detective "franchise"
just weak AF plot w/ a solid cast (on paper) and sweet effects/filming/bs
