So without using the inter web, who here (under the age of 50) knows the answer to the following:

Who was the first man in space?

If you don't know that answer; What exactly did John Glenn do as his claim to fame?

P.S. I'm not trying to make a point. It's just that the space race was a very exciting part of my growing up, and I'm curious if it was meaningful to the next generations.

OK, you're correct. My mistake, I meant the first American in space.

A follow up question:
If you were living when John Glenn went into space, what did most households do during that night??

Not in the US

His flight wasn't very long - 90 minutes for each orbit and he had three. He wasn't up during the night.

So sorry. I remember in 1960, 61, or 62 (can't remember which year) - we stopped class at at Texas A&M to listen to Glenn orbit the earth 3 times. A true hero; he was will to sacrifice his life for his country many times over!

My brother was the first mate on John Glenn's yacht. He owned it with a general. Nice guy that was easy to talk with for anybody.

That movie about the space race has held up. I think Glenn was running for president around the time it came out in the 80's. He was running as a Democrat and even then it was said by some that "the liberal Hollywood left" had planned it this way.
