IT GRINDS MY GEARS!!

That these kids show up and get a free education, food, lodging and basically sign an agreement to play ball. The boosters and fans fan all their hard earned money to pay seat royalties and tickets.

Then all the sudden the player can just say, “I don’t want to play in this game”. And it’s acceptable.

What happened to accountability? What has happened to living up to your obligation? What happened to having some kind of loyalty?

These bowl games approach and it should be a good opportunity to show out for scouts and to win another game for the fans. The fans pay good money to show up with hotel and flight bills, but you are too #### important to play in the game.

It’s just all trash and it goes back to these parents who think they, themselves, will get a free ride to retirement off their kids.

It just sucks.

Here is someone that would “sit it out”

Are the brands going to offer a lifetime of support for players who have a career-ending injury? No. Nobody is. Once those guys are done, everybody else is done with them.

I’m perfectly fine if they are projected first 2 rounds in the draft that they sit out, that makes sense to me. But if not then it’s BS. There should be a rule you can’t hit the portal till all bowl games are done. I understand it would mean they might start spring classes a few weeks late but who cares, not like those guys barely go to classes.

That cotton bowl was awful last night without the starting QBs that played all year.

Than money. It's ruining college football. It ruins marriages. It ruins families. It ruins lives.

Live by your word and you always will have some money. Live by money and your life and word go down the drain. And you either end up lonely with money or lonely and broke.

This isn't a football post but I think it is in the same ballpark of a response.

Maybe it's known that the player has the option and their word isn't broken. Also, maybe they are thinking about their families. I bet most of the players who come from famies weren't even middle class. They have about a 5 year window to possibly change their family's lives forever. I am sure they have made promises to their families as well. Your word and plans may change if you were broke and protecting yourself and family's future. When you were 20 and somebody offered you a job for 40k and you accepted it, but all of a sudden later that day you were offered 1 million per year. You would change plans. Money makes the world go round.

"Life is what happens while you are making other plans."

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You can argue whatever. It doesn't matter. Everyone wants money

Everyone needs money. There is no economic reward for loyalty, or keeping promises, or anything else.

When I was 23yo someone offered me $400,000. I turned them down. I own some land. I leased it to a farmer for his cows to graze on. A hunting club said they'd be interested in leasing the land from me. I said I'm already leasing the land to the guy across the street. They offered more per month in lease payments than the farmer gave in a year.

I sat down with the farmer. Told him the situation, let him make the call. He finished out that year of his lease (about 10 months), and I paid him for the fertilizer he put out towards the end as his cows would not be able to get the full benefit, AND the next fertilizer for his cows in the place he moved to, after giving him plenty of time to find another pasture. He made the call. And it wasn't a written lease with him, totally verbal. And that's how I handled that. The hunting club was willing to wait. I told them they'd have to wait or no deal.

Now I could have taken that $400K and lost my house in 2008, or kicked the farmer off the land immediately. I did neither. Cost me about $7K to keep my deal with the farmer, more than he'd pay me in 10 years. He and I have no regrets or hard feelings. Hunting club is happy now as well. He now hunts with them.

Its all situational, but nothing has changed in the world, other than there is more potential to make money. Your situation was an anomaly, altgough very respectable and commendable that you were in a situation to do that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If you keep your word, you will always be in a situation to do that.

2

Dec 30, 2023, 11:39 AM

That's HOW YOU GET in a situation to do that. My luxurious situation, at the time, was fresh out of college, newly married, with a dog, and a household income well under $40K living in an apartment. Those 20 acres of land were my main (only really) asset. Someone offered me a bad deal for a $400K mortgage, in that "situation", I had no excuse NOT to take that great deal, other than the fact I realized it was a bad deal. Flip side, I also forwent roughly 1/4 of a year's added income, to keep my word. That farmer could have just said forget it, I'm staying. But he is also a man of his word, and as such I laid the situation out for him to make the call, and together we arrived at a deal. 20+ years later I've made well over....a lot from that hunting club, and they're happy today, as am I, and the farmer. He hunts free with the club btw, to this day. They made a deal as well, and they are people who keep their word as well. He sacrificed some for them, and they were kind enough to repay him with a free membership.

This is how America is supposed to work, and how it worked in the past, and still works in "poor" rural areas chock full of supposedly miserable people in bad situations. Chasing dollars and leaving a trail of people high and dry in your wake is not the way things used to function. That's acceptable today because everyone has a "situation". If you choose wallow in your own personal situation, that's fine. But if you pay attention to other people's situations, and forget about your own situation, your own situation generally improves.

For a kid from a poor background that is a potential first round draft pick to risk millions to play in a bowl game would seem like a very bad financial decision.

We all do what is best for our families in virtually all instances. To me this is no different. Sure, I would prefer to see the best on the field for my entertainment, but for me to be annoyed about many kids coming from nothing doing what's best for them and their families would be selfish on my part.

I would like to see the whole portal deal tightened up. Sign the kids to a 4 year contract or at least one with a provision that if a player chooses to leave, they must sit out for a year.

I'm not sure where college sports are headed, but I know I have zero interest in participating over and beyond my IPTAY contribution with the 110 initiative.
