Any Alma Maters Besides Clemson

16

Jun 17, 2023, 1:14 PM

For those of you who didn't attend Clemson, what is your alma mater?

My connection to Clemson is my half sister, two-years older than me, who is a Clemson alum. Although I wanted to attend Clemson, I wasn't in a position to take on large debt associated with out-of-state tuition, so I attended a Virginia school.

I am a George Mason University Patriot. Funny thing is, I frequently wore a solid orange Clemson sweatsuit around campus.

My best friend, also a Mason alum, has a younger brother who is an ECU alum. While his brother was a student there, we drove down to Greenville for a weekend. ECU played West Virginia that weekend in football. ECU won. That was a really fun time I'll always remember.

Lee Chapel, where I signed the White Book.

My ties to Clemson are many. Family and friends that attended, my father was hired by Frank Howard as Wilhelm's 1st assistant & the freshman baseball coach. He had played professional baseball and was a Civil Engineering student when Howard hired him.

As the story goes, Howard knew my dad and told him, "I'm not hiring you to make the baseball team better, I'm hiring you to make my football team better." For those that know & don't, Coach Smith who was the baseball coach at the time, was one of Howard's football coaches and only part-timed as the baseball coach. Howard wanted his staff to focus only on football, so he called HOFer Walter Rabb @ UNC and asked him for a recommendation for a full-time baseball coach. Coach Wilhelm was on staff at UNC, Rabb told Howard to look no further, Wilhelm was his man.

The only Lacrosse game I ever saw in person was Washington and Lee vs John aHopkins in about 1974-5. My sister went to Southern Seminary near by and we went over for the game. Both schools were ranked pretty high.

He's since been inducted into the Hall of Fame.

Fairly amazing during Coach Emmer's tenure, Washington & Lee was Division III, offered no athletic scholarships, but played DI in Lacrosse as an independent. I was fortunate to see some really good Lax while a student including the infamous Armadillo Game. Mike Pressler, among others, played for Coach Emmer before JE moved onto Army.

4

Jun 17, 2023, 2:29 PM

Got my bachelor's degree in 1973 and my master's 1 year later, both at Valdosta State College (now VSU).

My connection to Clemson is limited.

1. While in grad school at VSU I took a couple of courses from a young prof (really nice guy and a great teacher, BTW) who was a Clemson alum. Thanks primarily to his efforts I was offered a scholarship to work on a Ph.D. at Clemson. I also got engaged at about the same time. I decided to turn down the offer.

2. I attended Clemson in the summer of 92. I was teaching at a community college. Graphing calculators were just being used by colleges and universities. Clemson was a leader in using them. Spent 8 weeks sitting in on a calculus and linear algebra class learning how to incorporate them into the curriculum.

Side Note: Coincidentally, we hired a young kid just a couple of months before that who was just finishing his masters to come to VSU to teach math. Great guy. I was chair of the search committee that recommended him. (He's still employed at the community college I taught at for 30+ years and retired from.) Later on, he became the department head and was my boss.

3. I found T-net when I was following the coaching carousel and Clemson was looking for a coach. Y'all ended up hiring Tommy Bowden. Posted for a year or so after that. Been a Clemson fan (after FSU) since then. Came back to T-net a few years ago and was graciously welcomed back. Great community, T-net. I actually spend more time posting here than I do on my FSU board.

Funny, on my mother's side of the family, the ones who care about CFB are chicken fans, except for me, a younger cousin, and her husband and kids.

When relatives were visiting recently, my cousin's young daughter asked me, "Why are you a Clemson fan? We're a Gamecocks family."

All I could do is laugh.

University of South Carolina. At least that's what my diploma says, but hear me out.

I was accepted to Clemson out of High School, but like an idiot, chose North Greenville to be a few minutes closer to my girlfriend who was still in high school in Greenville. I wound up dropping out after a couple of semesters at age 18. I went back at age 31. At that time, I had been a lifelong Clemson fan, and an Iptay member for 23 years (yes, since age 8). I didn't have the math credits (calculus, I believe) needed for Clemson this time around, but did not need them for USC-Spartanburg (now USC-Upstate). I never really considerd USC-Spartanburg to really be "USC" or the coots; they had a totally different, separate identity in my mind. They were The Spartans, and thier colors were green and white. It never really dawned on me until I got my diploma, and it said "University of South Carolina".

The girl the 17-year-old me ditched Clemson for broke up with me about the time school started, so that was all for nothing. Lesson learned. Not going to Clemson from the get-go is truly one of the biggest regrets of my lfe. I'm very proud of going back to college later in life and getting my degree, but I don't display my diploma or wear a ring!

I was born a Tiger Fan. My son is lucky enough to wear my 'Clemson All-American' T-shirt I wore as a baby/toddler. I wanted to go to Clemson but ended up joining the Navy instead. ASU has the Pat Tillman Military Scholarship and I am able to finish my Bachelor's and an MBA with my Navy TA, allowing me to save my GI Bill for some of my 5 children to use later. I do plan on doing the Clemson MSAL in Athletic Leadership when I retire - looking forward to it.

Our Clemson family is much larger than just those that went to school there.

Two associates from the Community College of the Air Force, bachelor's from Saint Leo's University and a master's degree from Webster's University. I joined the Air Force after graduating high school and had all of my degrees paid by the Air Force. I went to whatever college or university was on that Air Force base, so over the years, I had courses from various schools. When I retired from the USAF, I was in good shape and went into education. Will retire again in two to five years.

My dad's side of the family are Clemson people, so I grew up Clemson. Easy to continue when your colleges do not have football teams. I watched the 81 National Championship game from Torrejon Air
Base, Spain, but I attended the last two.

Parents met at Clemson, aunts and uncles went to Clemson, born in Simpsonville, moved to NC in ‘89 at 9 yrs old. It’s in my blood but my hatred is for Tobacco Road as opposed to coots.

I went to high school with a fella who was a year behind me who attended George Mason on a hoops scholarship. He would have been high school class of 82 (Eastside, in Greenville). Totally blanking on his name but a good guy. It's been a long time!

El cid…. Had way too much fun my freshman year at Clemson!!! Architect major since I was five but was not ready for calc 2 after breezing through high school!! Turned out to be an engineer!! And let’s just say the football season of 2003 didn’t help either!! Haha, went from saying I pull for both teams from SC pre college to the complete opposite and I’ve been a die hard ever since!

Started at Western Carolina where I hoped to be a baseball player but simply wasn't good enough at the next level...high school to college is a world of difference.
transferred to UNCC, graduated 1997..BUT, I have always and will always bleed Clemson Orange until the day our Lord takes me home.

Raised in North Carolina or would have went to Clemson, but out of state tuition and my lack of academic or athletic scholarships ended that dream.

I've heard George Mason is a very nice school, congrats and thanks for post!
