Any Car Mechanics out there?

Mar 8, 2013, 9:56 AM

Does fuel injection cleaner really work? Car has had a really rough idle, and will sometimes stall. It does not happen all of the time though, so not sure if it is bad gasoline or something.

Spark plugs?

Re: Car

Mar 8, 2013, 10:11 AM

Could be a number of things. Todays gasoline isn't that great. Ethanol just isn't best for todays engines. Especially small engines such as mowers etc. Try buying some 100% gasoline and use a fuel supplement such as "Blue Foam" or Lucas gas treatment. The rough idle could be from a bad coil on the plugs, depending on what kind of auto you have. Probably not a serious problem.
As a side note .... buy American gas when you can. It will not necessarily make your car run better but you will not be sending money to the mid-east. Murphys (Arkansas) BP, Hess, Sunoco, and Valero are good choices.

sign is loss of top end power. Put the car in first gear and see if it misses when you get the rpm up.

No Distributer, it has coil packs. It isn't a common misfire or rough idle, so not sure if it is plugs, wires, or the coil itself.

Originally I thought it was the oil pressure dropping, so I checked the oil, and it was right on. I did go to a new shop (had a coupon) to get the oil changed, and noticed they used a synthetic blend rather than conventional (which was used for the history of the car). Coincidence?

YES

With a intermittemt miss that's the right place to start.

If you're going to use an injector cleaner - use SEAFOAM. I use it in my car, truck, motorcycle, and even my lawnmower. If it uses gas - I use it.

Seafoam is good for one and only one thing.

Mar 8, 2013, 9:05 PM [ in reply to Re: Any Car Mechanics out there? ]

It helps burn carbon off the pistons. That's not a big deal with a four stroke engine because the rings rotate constantly while the engine is running.

In a two stroke the rings do not rotate and will freeze with carbon buildup. It's also notable that two strokes engines must have carbon producing oil added to the gas.

I'd also recommend Seafoam for deisels. The fuel is oily and carbon buildup is a problem if you don't run them at high RPM often.

Seafoam is a waste of money in a four stroke gas engine.

The first thing I would do is clean the throttle body. While your doing that. Look for some vacuum leaks. If its a ignition or misfire problem. You would be getting a code.

Re: Any Car Mechanics out there?

Mar 8, 2013, 11:04 AM

No check engine light or diagnostic codes, so I don't think it is the ignition system.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

maybe carbon buildup in the throttle body.

the Idle air control valve could be something worth looking into as well.
Usually part of the throttle body and basically controls the throttle opening when the cars at idle so if they get gunked up (which they do) is can make the car idle rough.

Battery cable connectors

Mar 8, 2013, 7:00 PM

my rough idle was cause by rusted/corroded battery cable connectors, apparently Modern cars are sensitive to battery voltage to run properly
I have had good results with injector cleaners. If they are really bad you need to use it in every tank of gas for a while

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

How often do you drink the stuff?

Mar 8, 2013, 9:20 PM

I've had some moonshine that I'd swear would clean injectors but I use Mann fuel filters and don't worry about injectors.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpgringofhonor-clemsontiger1988-110.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

NO.

Mar 8, 2013, 8:59 PM

Anything that would clean an injector would screw up the rubber lines and seals.

Before you spend a penny on 'fixing,' the car check out the ignition system.

After dark tonight start the car and raise the hood. Move the spark plug wires around a little and look for flashes of light which will indicate broken insulation on the plug wires.

Next take a spray bottle of water and mist the distributor cap and the wires to see if they are being influenced with moisture. Don't wet them just give a rampant spark a place to go.

Don't start changing parts.
