Anybody know the grand long range plan for West Campus?

Aug 2, 2022, 7:21 PM

When I was in school in the late 80s, the center of activity was Johnstone/Edgar’s/Student Union/Loggia/Harcombe. Now, the bookstore is closed, along with Harcombe and Edgar’s, most of Johnstone is gone or deserted, and the brick courtyard at the center of it all looks deserted and neglected. That is a huge and strategic piece of real estate near the center of campus. Surely there is a redevelopment plan in place? Walking through there reminds me of the Charleston Naval Base.

"Johnstone Hall was built in the 1950s as temporary housing where the Union Building Complex was built in the 1970s. Both buildings are in poor condition.

Though it has not been decided, it is expected that the area will be used as a green space for more student-centric needs." Greenville News, October 5, 2021

The work on this area was due to have begun in July.

Still feels like kind of a sad transition, but I am sure Clemson will make it look great, and it definitely needs some significant renovation from the eyesore it is now

Johnstone is a disgusting place to live.

Sure, back in your day when college was affordable and not a 30 year debt sentence it was okay to live in a building like that.

Now students are paying upwards of 40k per semester.

If you want to talk like you are a top university you have to pony up the cost to be one.

Students at Clemson are not paying anywhere near 40k per semester.

And what’s left of Johnstone is not used for housing anymore.

We must have been there around the same time. I remember live music in that open area surrounded by Johnstone. We felt like the hub of campus, frat quad, shoeboxes and east campus all around us.

I was there in the early eighties and can relate. The pool tables/game room downstairs and the snack bar also were a hit. But nothing beat walking downstairs from room in Johnstone and getting a Tall Fred or Big Ed at Edgars with some live music.

I think I read where they start demolition around a year from now. Don't know what's going in its place.
