Anybody understand Finebaum?

Oct 23, 2023, 3:06 PM

Forget whatever “hate” these guys probably don’t really have.

That weasel is very blunt and pretty harsh. Especially towards Dabo.

But, you cannot say there is zero truth to his comments. Not the idiot part. But just everything that Dabo lets in the way of success again.

The portal, hiring inside guys (not OC but all other positions), and so on.

I think it’s the da*n truth that what worked 10 years ago does not work today. It is not like we lack the talent to be successful, there is just a couple of positions that need replacement.

I think the path is clear. Keep recruiting consistent and top priority. Use the portal for certain positions. If someone is not performing well enough, replace them. The QB position is granted more development time.

Clemson has fallen a bit, but it is also that the whole ACC aren’t a bunch of cupcakes anymore because of the portal. Either get with the program that these other schools are with, or get left in the dust. That is it. You cannot wish your way around it.

Anyone who thinks Finebaum has a personal vendetta against a struggling 4-3 Clemson is delusional. The days where we were relevant and we had reason to be mad at Finebaum are long gone. We have too much clean up to do before we can be elite again. Nothing he’s said recently is factually wrong. If you believe current Dabo can take us back to the top you’re not being realistic.

I'm no fan of Finebaum, but I think his comment about Dabo being a "blithering idiot" was mostly a characterization of Swinney's self-defense statements on the fan-base in particular, not a general characterization of Dabo as an idiot comment. And on that note, he's not entirely wrong. At time, Dabo puts his philosophy of "optimism and self-defense at all costs" above candid, sober, prudent assessments.

So, despite how easy it would be just to lash out at Finebaum, I can agree, he's not entirely off base.

I think Dabo is trying to stand up for the team.

But I think what that locker room and what the program needs Dabo to do is to be honest. There is no way Dabo can see “true good” behind the scenes.

And you know the team knows that we are not just “a few plays” from being elite. We are struggling to win each game. That is the most glaring issue since Trevor left.

But Dabo seems out of his mind to me. He’s obviously struggling personally because of all the pressure. But I just don’t see the fire and belief in him anymore. And he’s always bringing up remarks like, “Well if we’re not undefeated we suck.”.

You are paid $10 million a year. I would rather you decline press conferences and refuse to say anything rather than say some bulls*** like that. You are not only paid to win, but to look as good as Georgia, Ohio State, and others.

We are nowhere in the vicinity of being a national championship team.

Agree / Disagree

. . . I agree with almost all of what you said, except for Dabo trying to stand up for the team. I think that's probably his self-rationalization for why he bristles so hard at criticisms and tries so awkwardly to put lipstick on a pig, when really what he's doing is trying to defend himself.

I don't doubt there's an element of wanting to defend the team in there, too, but but I think it's clear he's defending himself and his own record and legacy just as much if not more than the team's "honor." He's issued so much verbiage talking about how bad things were before he got here, and how we've won 2 Nat'l championships and a bunch of Conf titles and had all these 10/12 win seasons under him . . . all true, but not all related to defending the players from bashing.

Has been predicting our decline nonstop since 2016. I mean sooner or later he had to be right. Also, very naive to think Paul doesn’t have a vendetta on Dabo, driven mostly by the fact the Clemson unseated the SEC for a few years.

But they give the same shtick to Alabama and other teams that should be performing better.

Like Texas A&M as well.

I know that all of us here on TNET think Jimbo Fisher is a moron. And Paul has bashed him in in numerous times.

He’s 100% correct about Jimbo. But all the sudden he’s wrong about Dabo?

I think Paul has an opinion of Clemson, but when it comes down to truly giving an honest assessment of Clemson’s coach and program, he doesn’t let any bias in the way.

My point here is, if you’re consistently losing, it’s not hate. Hate comes when you’re winning. Sounds cliche, but it’s a fact about human behavior. We are losing.

In fact, I am glad there are people exclaiming the real problems. Because it’s evident that either Dabo does not know them, or that he just won’t change.

Agreed. The sports pundits dont like Clemson

Oct 23, 2023, 3:40 PM [ in reply to I understand Finebaum ]

We are not bluebloods in their eyes and Clemson upset the turnip cart as far as they are concerned by winning two national championships. If Alabama falters they won’t be giddy about it. The media has the list of acceptable schools to win it all and Clemson is not on it.

We have lower level talent than in the past, coaches that aren’t able to develop talent as we once did and/ or just quite a few bad breaks in our games. I think we could be 6-1 pretty easily with maybe two good breaks, but still be the same team that will play NC State on Saturday who cannot afford bad fumbles.

Yes, PF's paid to get people to talk about PF & his program.***

I think Dabo thought the Clemson way would always work, but its a little harsher than that in the football world now and he needs to be a little more cutthroat with staff and hirings. JMO

Agreed.

But you know I think Dabo would truly rather have no more national championships with doing things his way rather than 3 more national championships doing it Georgia’s way.

We’ve fallen a lot.

We have managed to go from national championship contender to mediocre in the span of less than three years.

Respond to the main point.

I know you have always loved pointing out failures of the program. You’re good at it.

I humbly think that I am pretty accurate with the reasons for our decline, but you let us know you’re thought of reasons.

Sort of like we have been mediocre in basketball for the last 13 years under Brownlee!
