Anyone disagree? - UPDATE

9

Oct 23, 2023, 3:50 PM

“Clemson's defense has certainly performed well, but the offense is stagnant and lacks a definitive identity. The prevailing theory is that Swinney isn’t allowing offensive coordinator Garrett Riley any autonomy in running the offense.”

Edit - it’s a cut and paste from Bleacher Report discussing the state of the program after the loss to South Florida in 2010. I changed the tense and OC name. It’s was a common sentiment then and now. People have no more idea what will happen now than they did then.

Nope

I thought Riley said he was doing the best with what

he had or something to that effect.

Not really a diagreement, but there may be too many chefs in the kitchen. Dabo needs to back off or let new man run the Offense. Using both doesn't work.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I disagree.

Oct 23, 2023, 4:01 PM

The first sentence is true.

The second sentence is hypothesis, not theory.

The first half I thought we were finally seeing that identity develop

couple of deep shots, lots of tight end balls over the top, spreading it around to everyone.. randall had the best play of his career in a 35 yd post over the middle...it was opening up some runnign lanes for the QB and RBs as well. Defense only really blew 1 play. That was a 14 point swing.. -7 for us and +7 for them. But we've done this in every game we've lost. We've given away 14 points b/c our turnover usually results in a quick TD by the other team. WE're snake bit.

Totally agree that Dabo has tied his hands and Dabo continues to dabble in the offensive play calling. That is why I think he will move on after this year.

who would want him at this point?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't disagree . . . but

1

Oct 23, 2023, 4:08 PM

neither can I honestly say I know that to be the case. It's speculative. I do think it's suspicious that we've tended to get in bad play-calling ruts (overuse and situationally disadvantageous use of screens and up the gut runs) going years back, before Riley, before Streeter, and yet under Streeter and now Riley we still do. It does make one wonder if Dabo is - not exactly "THE"(sole) playcaller, but if he's either forcing his inupt to forcefully and hamstringing the OC, or else exercising veto power too often. Maybe? I don't really know, but I understand the suspicion.

I question whether that is true.

We have no idea what input Dabo has on calling plays but watching on tv, he does not. If Dabo gives Riley no freedom, he will be somewhere else next year. The defense has done well for the most part but got pushed around Saturday night. I am not sure I have ever a team keep the ball almost 14 minutes of the 4th quarter the way Miami did. Our lack of a running had a big hand in that because we could not even get a yard to keep the clock running. Enough issues on both sides of the ball to deal with and I am sure today's practice was interesting.

Re: Anyone disagree?

Oct 23, 2023, 4:19 PM

Oh I doubt that......re: practice. If you have seen Clemson football practices the past couple of years, they have become more of a "walk through" in shorts rather than a real contact filled practice. The softness and ineptitude you see on Saturday is exactly what is practiced all week. I don't know if they are scared of injuries, or if it is NCAA rules against contact, but their practices are an absolute joke. I went to one where they spent the last 15 minute segment practicing a reverse pass back to the QB, trying to figure out who could actually throw a pass. You never heard so much laughing and cutting up in your life. It was like a bunch of 12 year olds at recess. To the best of my knowledge, they have not run that play or anything like it since the ACC Champ game last year, so all that time was just lollygagging around and wasted.

I agree with the perception but I have no idea if that second sentence is true or not.

I don't know the answers; however, I will say this:

micromanaging has been the downfall of many large businesses, organizations, etc. throughout history.

That mistake of management typically causes a program to level off, then regress, and any talented professional is not going to stick around too long and put up with it.

Re: Anyone disagree?

Oct 23, 2023, 5:53 PM

No one, other than those coaches involved, know whether Dabo is calling the plays or changing many of the plays or not. I guess it makes it fun to speculate, but no person knows. If it were true, you can bet that no one is telling an outsider about it. If we can't block and tackle, what difference does play calling make?

It’s suspicious but I honestly believe he had higher expectations of the actual talent we had here and once he got here realized he didn’t have nearly what he anticipated to work with… believe it or not that tcu offense had better talent by a good margin at about every position last year than we have currently. And our offensive line is that weak that it handicaps play calling. I said this in another post also about talent,,, go watch Trevor highlights and especially in that OSU playoff comeback and we ran that little rb pop pass at the line but instead of it being a 2-3 yard loss he housed 2 and had another long run out of nothing. We don’t have speed anywhere that puts pressure on defenses. Imo that’s a lot of why the offense looks the same bc simple plays don’t work so there’s not much he can do… our wr aren’t great and can’t block at all so we screens that should be an easy 3-5 yards never works, our rbs lack breakaway speed or ability to break tackles, our line is horrible which causes a lot of the issues , and throw in a qb trying to learn and is clearly a developmental guy and this is what you get. I just find it weird he didn’t get to bring in his own OL coach or wr coach or anything… but then again he came here to learn the “Clemson Offense” apparently

Either Riley ain’t running offense or we got scammed in hiring him. If Riley has a seriously bad offense Shitz let’s him play wide openup from here out. Certainly couldnt be any worse than what we have seen so far. We got trouble when the defense is more apt to score than our offense

Re: Anyone disagree?

I really wish a media member would get the guts to ask Riley (next time Dabo deems it worthy of him being interviewed) if he was allowed to do a 100% install of his system.

Re: Anyone disagree? - UPDATE

Oct 24, 2023, 6:42 AM

Maybe Dabo hired Riley and sold him something to the tune of “Come in, learn this system, run it with the staff and personnel we have and see how it goes. After a season, if there are things and people you want to move out and bring in, its your call and we’ll evaluate it.” I cannot imagine Riley not changing anything or putting up with the awful OL, the awful pass blocking, the awful drop in production by the RB’s, the awful turnovers, or the awful deer-in-the-headlights demeanor of QB1.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It's Riley's system, down to changing 2, 5, 9 to X, Y, Z, no longer flipping...

1

Oct 24, 2023, 6:57 AM

for Field/Boundary, plus changing of the terminology and system of signalling in plays that goes with it - id est no more big boards. He was asked by DHood[I believe], and he answered.

As for new hires, Dabo consults his Coordinators and has said so, but he's also said he makes the final decision because if something happens, someone moves on, loses a job, fired, then CDS prefers not to be left in an awkward position of dealing with other's hires.
