Expansion idea that could save the ACC?

3 divisions of 7
FSU, Clem, GT, UL, Wake, NCSU, BC, (UConn)
UNC, Duke, UVA, SU, UM, Pitt, VT, (ND)
Stan, Cal, SMU, SDSU, OSU, WSU, BSU, (Gonzaga)
Gonzaga, UConn and ND non-football members.
The ACC could take advantage of WSU, OSU gumming up ESPN playoff plans by trying to get pro-rata for these 2 (remember the ACC has 1 left). I think it would be a win-win-win if ESPN agrees, even more so if the ACC could also get ESPN to over pay the market value of SDSU and BSU for the sake of adding late night content and robbing the MW (FOX) of their 2 top members so that the AAC (ESPN) and Sun Belt (ESPN) are in the driver seat for the G5 playoff spot. UConn is also a Fox property, not sure about what network owns Gonzaga, but it would insure that the ACC is hands down the best basketball conference in all the universe.
Skimming more money from the new adds and investing it in the "success incentive initiative" would mostly find it's way back to FSU and Clemson.
Tier 1 football and basketball games would be a little better than they are now, especially when you can create more mega matchups in a season.
The travel to the NW corner would be a little irritation, but that is not often and there are some potential fun games against those schools.
The per team payout via the ACCN would actually be no gain at best, a little less at worst.
Attendance would be the big winner and it gives the ACC a boost in football and basketball attendance in the 2 money sports.
The adds would help dilute travel to the west in all sports which means more money saved.
This would be playing the long game to find a better media partner post 2036 and capitalizing on monetizing the hands down very best basketball product.

The ACC is not lost. If UM is Miami, that is a hard no because they and FSU would always be in the same division.

Only thing that could save the ACC is contraction.... removing non-football profitable members. If you got down to Clemson, FSU, UNC, NCst, Miami, Pitt, VT, Louisville... Maybe those 8... you might get a decent per school payout.

I don't disagree, but it's way harder to kick someone out than to expand into oblivion. As much as I would like to start over and get the best 7-8 schools in the ACC in a new conference, having the brand recognition of the ACC and the ACCN is valuable in itself. The ACC more than anything needs better inventory, I don't see that with Stan, Cal, SMU. OSU, WSU brings good rivalry games with UW and UO, throw BSU in the mix and you have 3 games between one another that might get someone to stay up late to watch it; OSU vs WSU, OSU vs BSU, WSU vs BSU, these matchups could headline the late night ESPN spot along with the occasional FSU, Clem, VT, UL, UM visit.
Miami-FSU, BC-SU, Wake-Duke, UNC-NCSU, would be permanent cross over games.

and quit watering down your product. Clemson FSU MIAMI VT NCSU GT UNC UVA PITT LOUISVILLE
Play every team every year with 9 game conf schedule. For us, add chickens, one other SEC school, and a cupcake for 12 games.

FSU is gone and SEC and Big 10 are pulling out of NCAA so at some point you put on your big boy pants and tell the acc to pound sand or you decide to be a mid major school. I really don’t think Clemson has any plan to be mid major so when FSU bolts so will Clemson

That's not going to work. It's not going to bring in enough money. The only thing that will save the ACC is bringing in more money, and none of these proposals are going to bring in more money.

The only thing that would save the ACC is hook up with Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.

All you have to do is...
Mar 5, 2024, 6:22 PM
|
|
....convince ESPN or Fox to pay equal money they are going to pay the SEC and B1G and it will work.
Good luck.

The ONLY thing that could save ACC is a merger with Big 12.

Make the money competitive enough with the B1G and SEC that leaving is too cost prohibitive is step 1. Making the ones wanting to leave happy enough that they won't try again is step 2.
I believe this model addresses both, but ESPN has to be made to see the value in this conference model to pay accordingly. I just don't think the ACC can walk in the room with ESPN and ask for more money just because. The ACC should be able to sell ESPN on the value of having total control of 2 out of 3 P3 conferences and the best of the best basketball conference.
