Man Fishing

Jul 30, 2022, 10:48 AM

caught a 30 pound Snook and a 7 foot bull Shark, the latter stripped about 50 yards of line and the sucker cleared the water a couple of times, I did not know bull sharks could jump better than dainty mouf Bass. These were real fish that can take a human when provoked. Hooked a few tarpon, but none made it to the boat. I'll probably catch several the next time.

might post pigs later, I have to check and see how my hair looks first.

Go Tigers!

would do. And our live bait was larger than some of the tiny-mouthed bass I have seen posted in here.

LIve bait eh?

Some years ago I caught a 280 lb tiger shark with my bare hands.

I caught it on 30 lb braided line and medium tackle. This takes superior dedication and skill to pull in what, by all estimates, was a 150 lb apex predator.

30 lb braided line

Jul 30, 2022, 2:36 PM [ in reply to Re: Bull shark for sure.*** ]

I use 50lb braid, the hooks will straighten before it breaks. Lures are expensive, hooks are not.

135lb Halibut

Jul 31, 2022, 11:49 PM [ in reply to Re: Bull shark for sure.*** ]

Was fishing for cod in AK with 17# mono on a 5500 Abu Ambassador, 1/0 hook and half oz egg sinker in 40ft of water, just outside Valdez. There were 4 of us sleeping on a 32' boat, I woke up before others so I went out to catch cod. We were up in a protected cove not known Halibut but there was a salmon spawning stream in the back of cove. Well if you know the salmon cycle, they die after spawning and there happened to be a 135lb halibut up there scarfing the salmon getting flushed out. Just so happened he saw my little piece of cut bait while searching for his next salmon and bit.

Next part of story is I hooked this giant fish and basically a striper rod, I started hooting about big fish and I woke up the rest of the boat to see what's happening. They watched me get zero traction for 20 min then they decided to cook breakfast and eat while I was fighting. My dad started saying just cut it off, its just a big shark. My response was well dont worry about me then and y'all just eat breakfast while I try to catch this thing. At 45min into the fight we got our first glimpse of the big boy, they had eaten, cleaned up and packed my breakfast in foil by this time. But things got serious when we saw the big halibut. So up comes the anchor, now I could gain a couple hundred yards back, got over the top and made progress to the boat. Well I got it played, it's up my dad goes to harpoon it, his foot slips on the morning dew, he barely tags the dorsal fin, fish goes ape chit, rips the harpoon out and heads to the bottom but now we have moved out to 200' of water.

At this point I am over an hour into this fight, and I have fought this fish until he is totally sacked out. Problem is the rod/reel is not strong enough to lift 135lbs of dead weight from bottom. So we took a towel to grasp line and pull in 2ft at a time. The towel was to make sure we didn't pinch 17lb test too tight and cause it to snap.

Well here we are, almost 2hrs into this battle and fish is getting close to the surface. My Alaskan uncle says, wait, don't try that harpoon trick again, he walks in and out of cabin holding his 44mag. He said, ok give it slack when I say now, and dad you hit it with harpoon after 3 round. We get it to the surface, I throw slack so the concussion don't snap the line, he snaps 3rds in 2secs straight in the head, then my dad pops in the harpoon. Long story short, we had enough halibut for 4 families, I had to change my drenched shirt in 55degree weather, and I earned my breakfast.

So much for cod fishing when I can land a 135lb halibut. Its a great story for those that love to fish and I didn't exaggerate any part of the story. If I would, it would have to be 235lbs not 135. But one of my best memories ever.

was fishing in inlet one time and got in water up to almost chest high to get to sandbar. Ankle deep on sandbar about 15 yds away from gear. next thing i see is a big fat face and head peek up at me. i knew better but when fishing we have mucho party favors. bull friend hung out waiting for me to catch something or take me out. stayed on bar much longer than i wanted and then did my best mark spitz on return. second time I’ve had one eyeball me. other was on boogie board because my dumba$$ decided to go further out than most due to ex and kids on beach watching “cool” dad who had been popping vodka over italian ice for an hour after some adult pops and choc chip edibles. d@m thing was 3 ft away.

oh! 9ft mako took my king mack as I was getting it to the boat. was left a head - which of course i mounted (that’s what she said) ready for some tarpon fishing - that is definitely on tap in my future

Funny you post that today.
I was out on my paddle board and hooked a nice fish in the Tugaloo River this morning. My Bride was on the top level of the dock and got a photo.

Like my buddy Spud, always "catch and release".

My buddy has a condo and keeps his 61' Viking right there. He had never been offshore fishing and I took him on his maiden voyage fishing trip on his Viking. 3miles offshore there and caught a 127" white marlin. This was 3yrs ago, dude has been hooked since. Spent $30k on electronic upgrades and $20k on new rod/reel combos within a couple wks.

that wood depend on his pole? if it’s a tight spot, you really have to place it just right.
