As GM, would you draft Ship?

For me, no. I might invite him to camp to see what he can do... but in college, ummm...no. Doesn't have moves, and is an easy take down. The kid as heart, but so did Boulware. Spiller got injured, but even he was basically a bust.

I’d probably tell him his chances improve greatly if he continues to work hard and gets coached up another year in college.

I don't think so. He needs another year to work on his game. I think he needs to focus on his skills and work on the drops.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm not sure another year would improve his stock.

As far as draft projections this year, I don't know enough about the running back class this year to guess about that. It is hard to project running back success in the nfl.

Yeah in the 6th or 7th round. If you want to just hope you will get him, then you can invite him to camp. He will have his choice if he isnt drafted.

He'll be fine in the right system. He's probably in that Patriot's mold of Danny Woodhead etc. He's gonna be that guy that either finds that one team or bounces around b/c he does several things pretty well but isn't elite at any one of them. If he ends up in a veteran RB room, those guys will help him channel his aggression.

He'd be a good compliment to an Austin Ekeler with the Chargers. He'd be a fit in Kansas City. CEH is probably out this year and he could fill that role. There's probably room for him in Arizona. He's got options but I don't think he'll be a #1. He will be a decent returner and 3rd down piece that can handle a starting role when needed. That is a pretty good career.

If Mafah wasn't a choice, yes I would. We have watched Shipley play behind an average or less than average O Line, he could be much better if we had a really good O Line!!!

His only chance to make an NFL roster is as a kick returner

I think any realist can see Ship can't play RB full-time in the NFL. However, if he can excel on special teams as a return man, a team might give him a roster spot as a backup RB.

He needs to gain strength because he's too easy to bring down.

I think y’all are underselling Ship on this deal! I’ve seen him as high as 2nd round in some mock drafts. I do think the ball security issues will hurt him more than anything. I don’t have stats but his ball security was mentioned by scouts as a concern last year, and it seemed to me like he had a tougher time with that this year. Ship does not have elite NFL break away speed, but he has something just as prized in the NFL. He has exactly what Renfrow is making a career off, and that’s elite short area quickness. I’m the NFL that is highly valued. Ship needs to come back one more year and fix the ball security issue. He will be paid well if he does that.

Projected by ESPN gurus as 72nd pick (early 3rd round) in this one.

Second round in this one.

In the late rounds. His best role would be as a 3rd down back where his receiving skills could be utilized in a specialty situation. Don't think he'll be a workhorse RB in the Pros.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Perhaps as a late-round slot receiver

I think this year he would prob be a late addition like an UFA… but I do think he has the potential and skills to play at the next level I just think another solid year in the college to change the perception of the fumbles and becoming a little more balanced in his lower body would do him wonders… I def think these things are fixable and he can become a much more consistent back and play at the next level.

I know Spiller's 8-year career wasnt HOF-worthy, but certainly wasnt a bust either.

Draft Contingency Plan on Ship

Dec 16, 2023, 1:00 PM

Brains and effort are there. Checklist as follows:

1) Hand size. Met former Raider RB Pete Banaszak about 10-15 years ago. He played at 5'11" 210, but his Super Bowl ring was so big I could put 2-3 fingers in it. Huge hands. Great blocker. Never/rarely fumbled.
2) 40 yard and agility times. Preferably at NFL combine, if not at Clemson pro day.
3) Weight and body distribution. Unconcerned with height. Is his weight in lower/upper body? Can he move an NFL pile?
4) Can he catch NFL passes? His pass catching was inconsistent in 2023.
5) NFL camps. Can Ship get on the list and prove himself at Mobile, AL/other NFL camps?

2023 production dipped from frosh/soph years. Maybe he was hurt. My guess is Ship will return and lose more reps to Mafah in 2024. Pulling for him. And still hope Clemson will identify/rotate in a speedier option at RB in 2024.
