Falcons

Aug 19, 2022, 8:34 PM

I can’t believe the Falcons aren’t putting up a bigger fight for the Calvin Ridley year suspension with the decision made by the league for DW4. I know it’s two completely different cases, but just doesn’t seem right to me.

30 years ago when I was getting my ### kicked on the playground we called it “grit”. He has none (signed a HUGE Falcons fan).

As I agree what you’re saying

But in my opinion I think it’s best for the falcons. I think the Falcons want to trade him so if he plays he’d be on his last year of his contract which most teams will try and wait till free agency. They can trade him next year before the season starts for a better pick

What Ridley did is directly tied to on the field play and could compromise outcomes and the legitimacy of them. He compromised the integrity of on field play. Watson was all off the field and didn’t impact outcomes. I realize Calvin didn’t actually impact any, but that’s why they had to come down harder on him. The FBI actually comes and talks to all teams in college and pro to tell them about not betting on games and the legal consequences. Apple and oranges.

He bet on his own team to win a game that he himself wasn't even playing in. How does that compromise the integrity of on-field play?

It’s still gambling on the sport you play. Pete Rose claims he only bet on the Reds to win every game and he’s banned from MLB for life. They had to set a precise time, and if you read my post you would see I said HIS bets didn’t impact any games but gambling on the sport you play is the number one rule you can’t break. Hopefully with how hard the NFL went down on him it deters any others from doing the same or worse— that’s the precedent they were setting. Like I said the FBI meets with every team before each season letting them know they cannot bet on any games, it’s like a drug test in the NFL, it’s more of an IQ teat since they know the exact dates they will be tested a year in advance.

Ridley bet less than $4,000 total, over a period of 5 days

Aug 20, 2022, 5:29 PM [ in reply to Re: Falcons ]

at a time when he wasn’t even with the team. He clearly did it for entertainment reasons, not as a legitimate way to make money.

For reference, he was set to make $11 million in salary this year. Putting this in perspective, it is the same as someone who makes $50,000 a year betting $18.

The NFL is being ridiculous, as usual.

I certainly appreciate and respect your opinion, but it’s all about precedent. Players and coaches cannot bet on games, no matter what. It’s been that way for 100+ years, look back to the black sox, Pete rose, Tim donaghy, Boston college. The NFL has avoided those types of things and going hard on Ridley will emphasize that even more, they honestly had no choice with the legalization of sports betting. The NFL has embraced it and has books as sponsors now. What DW did was disgusting, but what Ridley did actually COULD impact on the field play and results.
