Back to back callers on the local morning Sports show

Sep 6, 2012, 9:34 AM

this morning proves that Clemson fans live in reality and Cooters live in delusion:

Clemson caller: "I'd like to comment on the Gamecocks and this discussion about Connor Shaw. I think the Gamecocks are going to have trouble whether Shaw plays or not. It reminds me of the VT game back in 2006 when we had a QB with a weak arm and they exposed our running game by stacking the box. If Shaw can't throw the ball well, especially to 6'0 or less receivers, eventually a team is going to expose them. I'm not saying the Gamecocks aren't good or raining on their parade. Spurrier is a good coach and he finds ways to win with what he has, I'm just saying that there will come a team who will expose their weakness like VT did ours"

Redneck coot caller right after: "I think Shaw will be fine. The reason he couldn't throw the ball is all on the Offensive Line and their problems. I think we should start using the triple option (author note: #####?). And what happened to using our tight ends? We should be using a two tight end set. Maybe Spurrier felt we had Vanderbilt in the bag and didn't want to show anything (AN: #####? in the bag?) I still think da gamecawks can win a national title even with Shaw hurt. They can't stop Latimo."

I lost 30 IQ points just on the way to work....

Sep 6, 2012, 10:32 AM

usuc as the 5th ranked team----I 'bought threw my neck out turning my head around and asked him if he was serious? I asked him if he saw a 5th ranked team on the field last thursday and he said "yes", I had to laugh in his face!! He then paid me my money---usuc did not cover the point spread and we did----I won BOTH games!!!

If you have weak oline play and all else fails, run the triple option.

*facepalm*

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Isn't the guy's last line exactly what they did in 2009?

Sep 6, 2012, 10:38 AM

Or 2010? They just gave it to Lattimore as much as possible. That worked out well...

The issues that's not being addressed...

is there is a big difference in RUN blocking and PASS blocking. Right now they are a RUN first team and their blocking showed it. If you look at their run bolcking objectively, their o-line did a decent job. However, their o-line had difficulty pass blocking against a Vandy D-line that was 15-30 lbs smaller in every match up. This exposed an underlying weakness in their team. Defenses are going to stack the box with 8 or 9 and dare them to beat you over the top. After 1 game, they haven't shown they can win those matchups down field.

(Very simplistically)in the zone read, teams leave the farside DE unblocked and the QB watches the reaction of the strongside DE to make the handoff or keep decision. If the DE crashes the line, you keep. If he sits back, you hand the ball to the FB. It's a pretty simple, but effective offensive. The o-lines responsibility on these running plays is moving forward, down-field, and picking up the interior D-line players and sealing the Linebackers. In pass blocking you are backing up, and generally playing a "3 technique" creating a pocket and keeping the defender in front of you. A very different thing than trying to blow a defender out of his spot. Backing up, a o-lineman must be careful to stay off of his heels and in a poor position of balance vs staying on their toes and driving the other man backwards (as in run blocking).

(Additionally in the ZR, on most plays the WR's have downfield blocking assignments on the CB's and safeties. Note they aren't creating separation on these run plays(as you would think of as the job of a WR), they're creating CONTACT. With their smallish WR's this creates a potential problem in downfield run blocking as well.)

I don't think the offensive struggles in that game were so much a conviction of Shaw's arm overall strength as much as it is was poor fundamental pass blocking by their o-line combined with Shaw's injury.

All I know is that Clemson's O-line played very well and did a good job of block both the run and the pass. I was very impressed Sat.

Valid points and good observations

If I got your meaning, the line blocks better in the run (as they should being a run-first team), and the WRs are trained to do such a thing to help out down field. But because of this, pass blocking isn't sharp, and the WR aren't getting the separation because they're being trained (moreso than not, anyway) to not create any because they are focused on blocking if needed.

Plus with a gimpy QB arm, hard to complete passes with no separation and no time given in the pocket.

Correct?

"their O-line played poorly", which wasn't 100% true. Their o-line played poorly on passing downs.

I thought the Clemson O-line performed much better when run blocking than pass blocking. I was very surprised at how well they run blocked. Thought the pass blocking was still substandard.

The first half we gave up some sacks. The second half Boyd hardly ever got touched. What was that you said about delusional?

Please reach way out there on your limb and tell us how the Clemson guy was delusional in his comment?
