Ben Boulware on WCCP

20

Sep 28, 2023, 10:20 PM

This may have been previously posted, but Ben Boulware appeared on WCCP today on the Qualk show. He was raw and uncaged. I was actually taken aback by his vitrol. He is very unhappy about what’s going on with Clemson football at the moment. Basically saying, if you can’t kick a 30 yard field goal lined up between the goalposts why are you on the team? Also said, at the end of the FSU game, the playcalling was baffling, both of the end of regulation and in overtime. He said it’s just so simple. Just keep doing what you’re doing. Instead you try something cute end up getting destroyed. He also took offense at Sweeney‘s comments that the 2023 team is just as good as the 2016 team. Boulware said the 2016 team would “wipe our butt with the 2023 team.” it was entertaining, but also a little concerning that a former player is so enraged about the current state of the program….

I appreciate Boulware & his unvarnished honesty***

He’s been there in our trenches, knows what needs to gut er done (remember him tracking OK qb & securing INT and vs Bama his telling players Hurts play was going to the right).

Despite the roid rage, he's right, the 2016 team would blow the doors off this year's team.

That 2016 team is the most resilient team I've ever watched. They would take another team’s best shot, laugh, get up, and coldly stab the dagger in their hearts.

The other crazy thing is that Boulware wouldn't be a starting linebacker on this year's team.

All that being said, I think we have the potential to be playing elite football by the end of the year. To me that's more than yards and first downs though.

It's the mentality. Refusing to be denied. Creating a margin wide enough that bad luck makes no difference. A team that knows how to smell blood when the opponent is struggling and consistently delivers the knock out punch when it's there for the taking.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Respectfully Disagree

Sep 29, 2023, 10:13 AM

Boulware may not be as well-rounded or as talented as current LB's but would start anyway as an upperclassman. (e.g. See Peter Woods and Ruke, Tyler Davis and Justin Mascoll.)

Re: Respectfully Disagree

Sep 29, 2023, 3:54 PM

You might be right…

Don't get me wrong, I loved his passion and his goal line stop vs notre dame is one of the best plays in clemson history

But I think we forget what a complete liability he was in pass coverage. Carter and Trotter are so much faster and effective in pass coverage. Just think there is a huge talent gap

Good for Boulware. He’s always been somewhat raw and wore his emotions on his sleeve. He puts it all out there. Our defenses thrived with his type of drive and emotion. And Venables was able to lead them because they respected him.
Our current teams the past few years are molded and cookie cutter Swinney boys.

We need more Boulwares if we want to climb the mountain again.

Did he slam Dabo's "inexperienced" friends and family coaches or whine about the portal like you and many others do constantly? Big difference in what he shared there versus what's shared on here so often from many. With Dabo upset with CK after that 3rd and 1 in OT for not running it, do you still think he's the one calling plays and undercutting Riley throughout a game?

Get real, chief.

There are definitely a few anti-Clemson trolls on here masquerading as Tigers. Mostly though the noise and 'expert observations' today sound eerily similar to Dabo's early days when 'real football men' simply knew better.

Go Tigers.

2024 purple level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

He questioned why a player was on the team.......

2

Sep 29, 2023, 8:56 AM

which is questioning DABO. Anytime a poster questions why somebody has a schollie on here they get blasted, but since this is a former player he gets a pass?......sounds bout right.

He also strongly disagreed w/ Dabo's asinine comment that this team was just as good as 2016.

and you got the wrong person "CHIEF"........I've never said Dabo is "undercutting" Riley, Cade should've never been given an option to pass, but it is what it is..........I've simply said "WE'RE JUST NOT GOOD ENOUGH FOR ELITE"...........haven't been in 3 years. The talent just isn't there.......nor is some "FRIENDS AND FAMILY COACHING"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: He questioned why a player was on the team.......

1

Sep 29, 2023, 10:52 AM

4 for 5 was a lot better than what we'd seen previously out of our PK. Stinks he couldn't finish 5 for 5. Isn't it horrible that Dabo went outside the box for a change there when what we had available wasn't cutting it? For shame.

I totally agree with Ben on the seeming shift in offensive playcalls there at the end of regulation and in OT. But the cat running that isn't your friends and family connection so there's that.

And yeah, a former player can voice what they want and deserve a lot of grace. They've paid the dues and walked the walk. The quacking fans are just that. Fans whined about the Swinney boys who never flubbed a kick snap having a scholarship. Fans continue to quack about the portal yet rave about Tyler Brown, who would not be on our roster as a late addition this past cycle and the 3rd worst rated recruit overall in the class.

I don't know that we're that far off on talent than 2016 actually. What's missing is on the field leadership on D more than anything. We certainly didn't lack for that in Ben's days here.

Go Tigers.

and I agree on the kicker......I don't blame the kicker for FSU.....I don't blame the fumble either. Just pointing out his POV and stance, even if it's a similar stance to some on here it gets a COMPLETELY different reaction, but that's tnet for you.

I don't think we're "far off" either, but we are 2-3 "ELITE" playmakers away, mostly offense IMO, but I'd take another "difference maker" defensively. Call it 2 Elite WRs and 1 defensive player away, which could 100% be taken care of by utilizing the portal if Dabo would and/or knew how...........like every other FBS team in the country (sans military academy). No fans are advocating for Dabo to go all Colorado on the portal, we don't need to at this point.

Sep 29, 2023, 12:13 PM [ in reply to Re: He questioned why a player was on the team....... ]

I think going outside for a kicker was smart. I think playing for a FG at the end of regulation was stupid. There were ZERO attempts a throwing it into the end zone. I know the sheet says play for the field goals. I largely agree with that, EXCEPT when you kicker has been on the team for 4 days and you are moving the ball all day long. Horrible call that will (and should) haunt Dabo and his inexperienced staff for a long while.

I'll add this: Will Shipley is another fire-breather, dedicating every ounce of energy into efforts on our behalf. I wish to heck our entire team.,.and certain staff members...had his all-out-war attitude. If so, we'd be undefeated right now, ranked right up there near the top!

1

Sep 29, 2023, 12:31 PM [ in reply to Re: I'm not sure I'd call that vitrol. He seems to be speaking ]

He just doesn't have the answers now that he had then.

Dabo was under the misguided notion that culture and love are why we became elite and won national championships, when in reality it was because we had generational talent at key positions. Of course team culture helps, and having a coaching staff with continuity is important, but without incredible talent on the field and on the sidelines we wouldn't have won like we did.

Dabo went "all in" on his belief that culture was the key. Unfortunately, now that we lack the generational talent and top notch coaching we once had, we are a shell of our former self.

The difference is that he had something to prove then, and he doesn't now. Nonetheless, I believe that Dabo still wants to win just as badly as he did before. He is looking for answers, because the answers that he thought were correct weren't.

My hope is that he is humble enough to realize the mistakes he's made, and will drop the rigidity that seems to be keeping him from making the changes he needs to make.

Ben seems to forget them struggling with Auburn, Troy, NC State, FSU, Pitt, and Virginia Tech. This 2023 team is totally the caliber of any of those teams if not better so to say they would 'wipe their butts", maybe they would if it was a playoff game, but through this point in the season it would very much be a dog fight.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Ben Boulware on WCCP

Sep 29, 2023, 9:10 AM

The 2016 team was not a great team for large stretches of that season.

An 8-5 Auburn team had a hail Mary in the endzone that got batted that would have won the game.
Troy was finally decided on an onside kick in the final minute.
Louisville missed it by a yard
7-6 NC State missed a 33 yard field goal to win it.
Florida State had 1st and 10, at our 34 with 45 seconds left down three.
We lost to an 8-5 Pitt team at home
Virginia Tech had 1st and 10 at the Clemson 27 down7 with 2 minutes left.

7 out of 13 games were 1 possession. Now that 2016 team knew how to win and the 2023 does not and that is what matters. But they would not wipe the floor with them. They hardly wiped the floor with anyone in the regular season.

Game 1 night game at Auburn WAAAAY DIFFERENT than at DUKE........we won by 6 AT Auburn..........we lost by 3 TDs at Duke.

the biggest difference is our TALENT could and DID overcome any mistakes we made.........PLAYMAKERS made plays when we needed them to. We don't have those ANYMORE. I keep hearing "well if it weren't for our mistakes, blah, blah, blah"............you're either good enough to NOT MAKE THOSE MISTAKES or you're good enough to OVERCOME THEM. Our 2023 just isn't good enough to be "ELITE".......there are a few reasons why that have been well documented on here........TALENT is one of them.

recent decline. Boulware helped build this program and while he was not the most talented LB we ever had - he gave it everything he had to the program. It's hard to watch something go into to decline that you had spent every waking hour of your 4 years at Clemson to build.

The one thing I would remind Ben is that Dabo also spent every waking hour for more than 4 years building Clemson. Keeping a program at the level of that 2016 team is just hard, if not impossible, to do. While I'm unhappy with our current record, I can see the nucleus is there for another championship run. We just have to stop shooting ourselves in the foot and find ways to win instead of loose. It feels like the same problem we had early in Dabo's tenure and we found our way out of it. I'm hopeful Dabo will guide us through it again and that we will once again be a top team in the country in the coming years.
