and the hype when we get one, particularly a high 4 or 5 star.
Remember him telling story of thinking he had Larry Zonka (?) who played with Cuse & later with Dolphins.
Mailed Larry a train ticket, had him on the train, then at a stop near DC he called his Mom to check in and she exclaimed get back on the next train north since Cuse has now offered you.
Coach Howard was devastated losing such a big bruising RB plus the train fare had set his recruiting budget back.

Coach Howard wouldn't believe we would need a coach for each position, two coordinators, football analysts and other full-time staffing, plus a head coach who wouldn't be required to coach other sports too and cut the grass on the fields himself before games.

You and I well remember the players that coach Howard brought in from the Pennsylvania coal mines! Many were not real good students but they certainly were BIG tough kids. Clemson AND Clemson football is so far ahead of those days that I can’t imagine a Tiger team in 1960’s with this kind of players... and support. We might have even beaten Georgia or Tech on a regular basis. Football Saturday’s were great then too!

Coach Howard was special, but he lost Larry Csonka because he was going to convert him into a lineman like he did Lou Cordileone and Don Chuy who were high school AA fullbacks.
I had numerous chats with him over the years, and I think I remember every one. I remember one in the late 1960s, and he hadn't beaten Tech since 1945. When I told him that I really wanted to beat Tech that year, his response was, "Your grandpappy told me that same thing."
