Big 10 Area Food

Aug 2, 2023, 2:49 PM

I have no idea if we end up in the Big 10, but just in case we do, here is a first pass at foods each area is known for:

1. Maryland: (Univ of MD): Crab, fixed any way
2. New Jersey (Rutgers): Pizza
3. Indianapolis (Indy and Purdue): Nothing jumps out at me.
4. Illinois (Northwestern and Univ of Illinois): Stay in Chicago (take a bullet proof vest and pistol if you’re driving). Go for a high end
steakhouse and Chicago Dogs. No thanks on Chicago style pizza.
5. Michigan (Univ of Michigan and MSU): Coney Island dogs. East Lansing crime is bad, so try to stay somewhere else. No
thanks on Detroit style pizza.
6: Ohio (the OSU): Nothing memorable.
7. Wisconsin: Beer and brats.
8. Minnesota: Walleye.
9. Iowa: Iowa pork chop with a side of corn on the cob.
10. Nebraska: Steak. Warren Buffet’s favorite steakhouse is Gorat’s.
11. California: (the real USC and UCLA): In and Out Burger, Mexican food, Asian food.
12. Pennsylvania (Penn State): Nothing stands out in College Station. Maybe stay in Philly for a cheese steak.

I have been to or near all of these areas on business, but less time near East Lansing and College Station. For the ones I listed as “nothing memorable”, I’m sure there is something but I never found it or never looked.

Maybe we can teach them about Southern Barbecue (pork of course) and the types of sauces….tomato based, mustard based and vinegar based. I didn’t include mayonnaise based because I don’t like it.

The Jimbo Fisher Slime Burgers with hot crab legs are standout choices in College Station. Whatcha talking 'bout?

Iowa is the fried pork tenderloin sandwich. They tend to be 3x bigger than your bun.

Minnesota and Wisconsin have good fried walleye. But you missed the fried cheese curds in Wisc and the beer cheese soup is good.

Penn- Philly cheesesteak "Wit or Witout", all you say for onions.

Cali has great chinese food.

Last time in Cleveland ohio and Louisville, I went to fairly nice seafood restaurants and they both offered whole fried lion fish. First time I tried it was for novelty but second time was because it's really good mild white fish. The one in Louisville was better seasoning.
