Blind Side Story

If y'all have a moment, this story is wild.

Pretty dadgum messed up if they really presented a conservatorship document as the same thing as being adopted....or am I missing something here that would make this make sense to do???

I worked across the hall from a NCAA compliance director and I can't watch the movie without alarms going off *VIOLATION* *VIOLATION* ... and that's just from the parts that are true. There is so much fiction in that thing, it's sad. Not a fan of that sports movie at all.

Question: Do YOU have actual knowledge of what is contained in the Guardenship Papers? If you do not, then I would suggest you not spreading misinformation. Watch the movie and it specifically mentions why he could not be adopted. Also listen as to why in order for him to get a license Mrs. Tuohy needed his mothers permission. There is so much more to the story and do keep in mind that he was a teenager at the time. If he is due monies then he should be granted them.

Unfortunately, in this world the worse things are, the closer they are to the truth. I was just talking to my wife about Michael Oher the other day about how the movie grossly exaggerated his upbringing and the way he ended up living with the Tuohy's - this story ending up being true would not surprise me. It's a feel good movie loosely based on truth.

Re: Blind Side Story

Yes you are correct. The only people who truly know what the situation was, were the Tuohy family and Michael Orr. None of us truly know. And, as I said before, if there are monies due then he is entitled to it. The situation with the state and NCAA were grossly mismanaged. But, I believe that Mrs. Tuohy is a good Christian woman who cared about people,

I just read the whole article

2

Aug 14, 2023, 3:46 PM

It says Oher didn't realize he wasn't adopted and that it was just a conservatorship until this past February when his lawyer found the document. But he also said the Tuohys told him at the time that a conservatorship was the same as being adopted, so there seems to be a contradiction.

He also didn't like being portrayed as unintelligent. And since he was a senior in high school at the time, seems he would have known what he was signing. Also, someone is lying - The Tuohys are saying he made money off the film and he's saying he didn't.

Seems to me...

Aug 14, 2023, 4:56 PM

he's currently portraying himself as unintelligent.

Also, an adult adoption is a different process than adopting minor children. In such cases, the court creates a legal parent relationship between the adopting parent(s) and the person over the age of 18. Once the court grants the petition to adopt, a new birth certificate is issued by the state. I 'm assuming none of that occurred in this case.

It is hard to know what the motivation is on either side when something like this comes out. IF, the family that "adopted" him were motivated by the money they thought they would make, did they know that when they took him in while he was in high school? Did they actually think that a conservatorship was better for him (or them) than an adoption? Who knows until it winds up in court and both side of the story come out.

The Tuohy's were wealthy before Michael Oher came along. My guess is that (at the time) they didn't want him to have full rights to their money like their two biological kids did. But you can't exactly come out and say that. The Tuohy's had lawyers on retainer for their businesses, and of them was probably savvy enough to figure out what was in the Tuohy's best financial interest and let them know.

Just weird this would come up now, but I can see both sides. Somewhere the truth falls in the middle I bet. The family seemed to help him out a lot and was part of the reason why he got where he got, but at the same time, even tho the family was already very wealthy...that can just make the greed even more and want to take advantage of the situation. It'll all come to light in the trial I guess, if it doesn't settle out of court.

Re: Blind Side Story

Correct. Their kind act of taking him in is too readily overlooked. He started living with them in the 10th or 11th grade. There were no $ signs as a potential future NFL player flashing in their eyes as the reason to do so.
Something may have changed later when it became evident he could play on Sundays. I guess we wait and see regarding how this plays out. One thing to keep in mind is that this was “pre NIL”.

Maybe they thought he was naive and would be taken advantage of. Also wouldn’t they have had to have been in on his NFL contract negotiations if this were true. Think he’s got someone whispering in his ear. This is more politics than meets the eye

Sean Tuohy later said that the family has been “devastated” by the claims and that his family never profited off his name.

“Michael was obviously living with us for a long time, and the NCAA didn’t like that,” Tuohy told the Daily Memphian. “They said the only way Michael could go to Ole Miss was if he was actually part of the family. I sat Michael down and told him, ‘If you’re planning to go to Ole Miss — or even considering Ole Miss — we think you have to be part of the family. This would do that, legally.’ We contacted lawyers who had told us that we couldn’t adopt over the age of 18. The only thing we could do was to have a conservatorship. We were so concerned it was on the up-and-up that we made sure the biological mother came to court.”

Legal representatives for the Tuohy family now claim that Oher tried to blackmail them for $15 million prior to the lawsuit by threatening to go public with the story.

“Over the years, the Tuohys have given Mr. Oher an equal cut of every penny received from “The Blind Side,’” attorney Marty Singer told TMZ Sports.

“Even recently, when Mr. Oher started to threaten them about what he would do unless they paid him an eight-figure windfall, and, as part of that shakedown effort refused to cash the small profit checks from the Tuohys, they still deposited Mr. Oher’s equal share into a trust account they set up for his son,” he added.

Singer further charged that Oher had been dropped by other lawyers until he “found a willing enabler and filed this ludicrous lawsuit as a cynical attempt to drum up attention in the middle of his latest book tour.”

“The notion that a couple worth hundreds of millions of dollars would connive to withhold a few thousand dollars in profit participation payments from anyone — let alone from someone they loved as a son — defies belief,” Singer told TMZ.

The waters are getting murkier. Definitely going to be interesting in how this plays out.

Personally, I take the approach that the truth is somewhere in between. Sure, it could be as simple as Michael O ran out of money and wants more...or that the Tuohys decided to capitalize on something that worked out and happened to make millions -- wouldn't be the first time someone did something like that to an up and coming talent.

I still find it odd that they sold the conservatorship the same as adoption. I did a quick search and in TN (where Michael lived with the Tuohys) adoption is still doable after a kid turns 18 so it's not like conservatorship was the only option...maybe it was an easier/quicker process than adopting? I have no clue tbh.

Anyhow, guess we'll just have to watch the legal battle play out.

If you enjoy college football you should read the book, "the blind side.". The book is about college football recruiting and the coaches the changed the game. Orr story is just one small part of the book.

Many stories from the 80' and 90 s too.

The blind side was a term bill walsh came up with. He was trying to stop Lawrence Taylor. He made the first move to make the tackle one of the highest paid positions on the team.

Check it out.
