Bourbon Talk - Friday Bourbon

My first bourbon talk thread of 2024. I'm about to do a blind head-to-head tasting: McKenna 10-year vs. Heaven Hill bottled in bond.

I had a few sips of Heaven Hill earlier this week, and it sat much better with me than it has previously. Now, I want to see if the McKenna sits with me differently.

Update: Surprise result. McKenna beat Heaven Hill, although it was close and neither set well with me tonight.

Which bourbons will you be sipping tonight or later this weekend?

Crown was my main go-to before I got into bourbon. I still like Crown, but got a little carried away with bourbon. lol

My dad retired a couple weeks ago, for a gift my brother and I are flying him to Louisville, going to hit a few distilleries on the bourbon trail, one of which is Heaven Hill. Never had it before. Looking forward to it.

The Jim beam to me was better and smoother. Kind of think the EC has more rye in it.

I've seen quite a number of blind tastings on various bourbon Youtube channels, and this happens quite a bit. It's always amusing to me to see the tasters' reactions when the blind tasting results contradict their not-blind rankings.

Buffalo Trace for me right now. Going to buy a bottle of bib and tucker next week to sip on. You know for all the hype the buffalo trace doesn't really spark my pallet. My neighbor had a bottle of bib and tucker and wow what a great bourbon. Especially for sipping. Super smooth.

RunJumpCatch, I suggest you get the Bib & Tucker Double Char. It's a relatively new offering and way better than the regular B&T. It's extra aged in double charred barrels and no extra cost.

I try more and more bourbons, but I’m just a Knob Crick 9 year fella. That’s what I always want. Hits all my taste notes and it’s affordable. I also like the Old Forester line and Wild Turkey 101.

I will be trying Still Austin soon. Heard good things.

I have an unopened bottle of Early Times BIB. A few bourbon Youtubers mentioned it as a good low-end bourbon, so I bought it out of curiosity.

I'm a fan of Knob Creek 9-year. It has earned a spot on the list I am making of 10-20 bourbons to keep on hand.

Still Austin is on my list of whiskeys to try whenever I can get my hands on it.

They carry 2 versions of Still Austin at TW. The lower end is around $40.

Very easy to make, just sub black walnut bitters for angostura bitters. Also good to sub regular sugar cube with a small amount of brown sugar instead. Gives it a great woody vanilla flavor. Cheers!

My nephew treated me to some Woodford 10 year special batch. Think it was like 140 proof, or so - sorry, I’ve slept since then, and tbt, I wasn’t planning on ever drinking it again. But, yes, to your point, it was like smelling/tasting gasoline/ethanol. TOO MUCH!!

PS: as a country boy who has had his share of ‘miscalculations’when siphoning gas back in the day, I do know what gasoline tastes like…… 😳😂😂😂
