Is this all covered in the trip? I can see that being very expensive for a program if they absorb some of the cost. Just curious, not sure if I have ever heard how all of that breaks down.

Bowls pay conferences to play, conferences then pool the dough and the teams pay their expenses out of that pool.

Thanks, figured it had to be something like that. Cannot imagine the expense for Coastal Carolina to play in Hawaii this time of year.

This is going way back, but I seem to remember early in Tommy Bowden's time at Clemson, we qualified for the bowl game on the blue field in Idaho and our take was about $975k and we about broke even after expenses. I'm sure that the time spent in bowl practice was way worth it. Someone else may have a better memory about this subject than me.

Bowls have a payout. The schools use the payout for travel. Any money left over goes to the ACC to be divided equally with the other schools.

In the time before NIL…
Bowl trips with travel stipends and gifts were a way to reward the players. Happy players make for a great recruiting environment. So the schools would spend all the money (leaving nothing for the ACC). In fact. They would dip into their own pockets to make the bowl experience great for the players. (Happy player are great for future recruitment).
