UAB and Davidson might be a lot better than people think

UAB beat Maryland today in the other Asheville Championship game. A lot of people seem to be down on Clemson because they have the impression that UAB and Davidson were just 2 cupcake teams. This was really never the case even to begin with, as both of them are strong mid-major programs. UAB finished 3rd in the Conference USA regular season last year, and runner up in their conference tournament. They then went on to finish 2nd overall in the NIT. The year prior, they finished with the 2nd best Conference USA record in the regular season, won the conference tournament championship, and earned an NCAA tournament appearance where they fell to Houston in the first round. Davidson had a down year last season, finishing with a .500 record, lackluster conference tournament, and no NCAAT or NIT appearances. But the year before that, the Wildcats won the Atlantic 10 regular season championship and finished runner-up in the conference tournament, losing 64-62 to Richmond. They earned an NCAA tournament bid, where they played Michigan State in the first round. Davidson came up just short against the Spartans, losing 74-73. The Wildcats were also an NIT team the year before that. Clearly, Davidson's disappointing season last year is far from the norm for them, and while it seems that they were heavily slept on entering this season, they were bound to have some positive regression this year. Either way, UAB and Davidson are far from pushovers, as Maryland and Clemson found out this weekend. But more importantly, they might actually both be very good teams this year, much better than most would've anticipated. I know it's a small sample size, but the 4 games in the Asheville Championship said a lot. Sure, it could still turn out that Clemson and Maryland just stink and UAB and Davidson will go on to have mediocre years. But it's also possible, and perhaps more likely, that this nonconference tournament was a precursor for the rest of the season, and that UAB and Davidson will outperform expectations this year, maybe even one or both being legitimate contenders for NCAA tournament berths in March. Obviously, it would be great for Clemson's tournament resume if things played out like that. Now of course it's very early, and it could still easily not happen this way at all. But either way, I will be very interested to see how the rest of the season goes for both UAB and Davidson. And right now, I believe it is much more likely than not that they will outperform expectations this year and both be very good.

Than the Lunatic Fringe thinks they are. The Fringe never gives Clemson basketball any credit for success and cannot wait to count the errors the team makes on the floor. They give up quickly. They call for Brownell to fired every day even though he is the most solid and dedicated coach the program has ever had. Only one losing season. The most wins ever at Clemson. This team exhibits Clemson Grit. They showed it today. The Fringe beats them down and they keep coming back. Sad.

Since Bard was hired 13 full seasons ago, we have exactly two seasons where we finished above 40th. Yet, Bard is pay is within the top 40.

Does this equation work for you? I was just curious since you forgot to mention the bigger facts of the matter.

Not only is he not the losingest, Brownell is actually the winningest head basketball coach in Clemson history. Now that might say more about the other Clemson basketball coaches than it does about Brad, and there is certainly plenty of legitimate criticism to be made of him during his lengthy tenure, but you can't just create facts that aren't true. Look on the media guide for yourself if you don't believe me.

Lol I don't know what to tell you dude. I'm not Judge Keller. I can't prove that to you (at least I don't think); you're just gonna have to take my word for it. I'm a new user who discovered tigernet a few months back and decided to create an account a few weeks ago. And for the record, I do support Brownell, but probably not to the extent that Judge does. I acknowledge that sometimes the Brownell defenders can be just as ridiculous as the haters are, and I won't hesitate to criticize him if it's warranted. But I must say that I find it disappointing that showing support for the basketball team, or even making a mostly objective assessment of their opponents in my case, is seen by many people on tigernet as a negative, which I assume is because people think I made that argument to try to bolster support for Brownell, which was really not the point of what I wrote at all.

handles, and too, Ol Keller is just a low brow scok of one of the mods. Tommy Crumpton is what I’ve been told. That’s pathetic if true, but hey, I guess the mods see more money in hits than to start listening to users and do what they ask and hence increase their 10% donorship. I guess they’d rather keep that sense of being all powerful as opposed to actually listening to users. Whatever, I guess they’re paying bills.

I am interested in that Slob Oxford angle though. I think it’s obviously a scok of the mod pretending to be Judge Keller.

I see where you're coming from, but I think that's a flawed comparison. I would argue that UAB and Davidson are both significantly better than Bellarmine. The Knights did have good seasons in 2021 and 2022, finishing 2nd and 3rd in the ASUN respectively. They also won the conference tournament in 2022. But they weren't even in Division 1 until 2021, and they're still within the 4-year transition period that prohibits them from postseason play (they would've otherwise had an NCAAT berth due to the conference tourney win in '22).

While they do deserve credit for 2 good seasons so far out of 3 total at the D1 level, putting them on the same level as UAB and Davidson, 2 longtime D1 programs that have had mostly winning seasons consistently for years now, would not be warranted. Furthermore, Davidson's conference, the Atlantic-10, UAB's conference, the American Athletic, and UAB's former conference, Conference USA, are all significantly better conferences than the ASUN. All 3 of them are roughly top-10 D1 basketball conferences, and the ASUN is nowhere close to that. So it seems safe to say that trying to equate Bellarmine to UAB and Davidson is inaccurate. The Blazers and Wildcats should be a lot better.

I've seen you repeating this same argument on several threads recently, and I would offer you a different perspective that you might consider:

Remember that basketball is quite different from football. There are significantly more D1 basketball teams (well over 300) than football teams, and the FBS/FCS distinction does not exist. Obviously, there is still a large discrepancy in quality between the top and the bottom, but there is generally a lot more parity overall in college basketball than there is in football. So with more teams overall, and more teams who are closer in ability to the teams above them in the polls, the list of quality opponents in basketball will extend out much further than it would in football.

Now, I'm not trying to tell you that UAB and Davidson are Arizona and UCLA. But what I am telling you is that the numbers 81 and 102 are more valuable than you're giving them credit for in this context. They're good wins. Not great wins, good wins. Both could easily be Q2 by the end of the year. And more importantly, Clemson doesn't need UAB and Davidson to be their most impressive wins. They'll have plenty of opportunities later with some bigger names. They just needed this tournament to provide some solid nonconference wins to help round out the rest of the resume, which they got.

but they have already made their minds up that Brownell is awful, and will go to great lengths to criticize him and avoid giving him credit for anything.

The fact that they try to compare college basketball to college football tells you everything you need to know about their background as a fan as well as their understanding of college hoops.

Thanks. And to be fair to clemzn1981, he didn't say that he was trying to compare football to basketball. I brought that up in my response to try to make the case to him that wins in the 80-100 RPI range in basketball are probably more valuable than they look.

As far as Brownell is concerned, I know he's a hot topic on this board, but as I said earlier in the thread, my original post wasn't even about Brownell, it was about the team's potential resume. That's the thing a lot of folks seem to have missed here. They think I wrote all that just for the purpose of spinning a pro-Brad narrative, when that wasn't the case at all.

Of course, that's also not to say that I have anything against Brownell either. I think he has deserved fair criticism at times, but I generally like Brad and I want both him and the team to be successful.

and set a school record for wins in the process.

They lost to Florida Atlantic in the conference championship game. As we know, FAU ended up making the Final Four last year.

Since they lost their conference championship game, UAB went to the NIT. They lost in the NIT championship, finishing as the runner-up.
