Bryant Wesco

Oct 10, 2023, 2:11 PM

This guy is our path to the playoff.

Even given the amount of mistakes we’ve had, from Cade handoff miscues to missing FGs, if there was one elite playmaker on the offense, we are likely 6-0.

The transfer portal has nothing to do with anything. Clemson has the #5 ranked roster in the country. The recruiting has stayed relatively consistent with 5-stars. But I will say that Keon Coleman’s presence for FSU won them that game in OT.

But Westco is currently 9th overall in the country, and now ranked ahead of Mike Matthews, who was wanted by many more fans than Westco.

Tyler Brown and Stellato have stepped up, and Collins has done okay. But 2023 is the rise back up year, and 2024 will be Clemson’s because of added elite talent like Westco, Sammy Brown, etc.

agree that Wesco is the type/style of WR needed to help tip the scales back in our favor (we probably need two), but I need to see it from Grisham first.

1. I heard similar about Ngata, Ladson, Collins, Collins, EJ, etc...
2. Your statement implies we're putting our playoff contention/hopes on a FRESHMAN, while that can and has worked, it's not the most comfortable position to be in. If he can have Justyn Ross impact as a freshman, then that could go a long way in helping us off the CFP contention mat.

Also, you can't say "the portal has nothing to do with anything" then say "keon coleman's presence won FSU the game in OT"..........that makes no sense.

Likes it's some kind of moral conundrum for your conscious to wrestle as you lie awake considering such a life altering decision to break the 11th commandment: to spend an eternity in the 7th level of H€|| for advocating use of the portal or follow the pumper pretexts from CDS 1:1–3 Obedience w/o Question, by silently opposing the practice of unyielding Portal abstinence that only successfully equips the opposition w/ an advantage when acquiring roster talent and sullies future chances should a reversal of position on the TP ever take place. Sullies future chances, by this I mean: it's reasonable to assume that an informed Portal prospect would view the climate here as less than ideal for a transfer. If unaware, rest assured the opposition will remedy this with extreme predjudice-

Re: wait and see approach.......

Oct 10, 2023, 5:26 PM [ in reply to wait and see approach....... ]

Our most productive receiver last year and so far this year have been true freshman who were late takes for us in the recruiting cycle. We will have some good depth at the position next year. If the 5 stars play like 5 star freshman it could be a problem for opposing defenses.
With Stellatto coming on, I am anxious to see Brown, Williams and he all in the rotation at once.

If our signing class stays where it is and our top guys don’t get enticed by the portal, T-Net will once again be disappointed that we did not pursue a receiver in the portal. There should not be a need to. Unless we want to throw a skins hotdog NIL deal at a dynamic and reliable kick returner.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: wait and see approach.......

Oct 10, 2023, 7:20 PM [ in reply to wait and see approach....... ]

Well Justyn Ross did have an impact like that. And so DID Sammy Watkins. So has Stellato and Brown.

Sammy Watkins instantly turned our team from 6-7 to 8-0 the next year, not by himself of course, but his impact on the Auburn 2011 game, the FSU 2011 game.

The Maryland 2011 Kickoff Return for a TD by Sammy won that game. Along with the 400 all-purpose yards and TDs that he had in that game.

If this 2023 team had Sammy Watkins, they are 6-0! And you cannot tell me otherwise. These screens that are going for nothing, Sammy was a guaranteed 6 yards every screen you threw to him. And so on.

Bryant Wesco is a 5-star, top-10 nationally ranked player. As a receiver. Usually, and I mean pretty much all the time, WRs that are ranked THIS high will pan out at least in college. Especially being from Texas, he’s got it.

If Wesco comes in and makes a Sammy Watkins like impact, we’re in the thick of everything we want to be.

I disagree about Colman winning the game because he was a transfer, it was because our DB that had locked him down the entire game got hurt just before OT.
It’s not about the other team players it’s about our team players. We still have good enough players to compete with the best.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bryant Wesco

Did you see our DB draped on Coleman in OT? He made a great catch. Bottom line, he wouldn't have been on the field without the portal, so to say the portal has no impact at the same time as saying Coleman beat us is just nonsense.

Re: Playmakers make plays***

Oct 10, 2023, 7:42 PM [ in reply to Re: Playmakers make plays*** ]

That was on Cade. He held the ball wayyy too long. He started his progressions from the left side, but he kept his vision towards the left the whole play and did not see the 2 slightly open receivers to his right on a slant and wheel route. Even though their corner was on a open path to the QB, Cade still should've picked a target way before he did. But regarding who else takes the blame for the blocking, it was the right guard (I think Tate #77) that decided to double team the d-tackle instead of take the corner.

Correct.

And still, the fact remains, that he wouldn't have been on the field without the portal.

Listen, I'm no big portal fan. I don't have an issue with the way our roster is managed. My post history will tell you that.

But to say in the same paragraph that the portal had no impact while also saying a player who transferred via the portal beat us is just ridiculous.

By the way, Coleman had 5 catches for 86 yards and 2 TDs. It's not like that OT catch was his only play of the day. He kept them in the game all afternoon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bryant Wesco

1

lol...did you see how big those 5 catches were? The offense scored 3 TDs, and he had 2 of them...and here you are trying to downplay his criticality in the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bryant Wesco

1

Oct 10, 2023, 3:27 PM

Again, he never even has a chance to do that if we don't miss a chip shot field goal. Or if we don't fumble for a touchdown.

If Coleman was playing as great as you say he was, then he would have had 200 yards receiving, and Florida St. Epuls have won by 20 points.

Yes, I'm absolutely downplaying him because he simply dud not play as well as you are claiming.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bryant Wesco

Oct 10, 2023, 3:30 PM

Why is that relevant at all?

He had a chance to make a play. He made it. You are making some very odd, asinine excuse that it doesn't matter that he made that play because we made a mistake earlier in the game.

Seems completely pointless to have this discussion with you.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bryant Wesco

1

Oct 10, 2023, 4:42 PM

I'll tell you why it's relevant.

The entire premise of the OP's point is that our lack of using the transfer portal is not why we are struggling.

My point about Keon Coleman is this. People keep pointing to Keon Coleman as a poster child for why the transfer portal is so great. They think we can grab any swinging d--- out of the transfer portal, and he will be the next coming of Sammy Watkins.

Well, that's not true. Even if you put the almighty Keon Coleman on our team, it still would not solve our problems. That's what I'm looking for. I'm looking for evidence that Keon Coleman, PLAYING FOR CLEMSON, would bring our offense back to the level it was in previous years.

I see none of that. Florida St. Was pretty s----y on offense against us. The only had 17 points in regulation. Are defense handled them, even the great Keon Coleman, pretty well. Again, what beat was was an awful turnover and an awful missed field goal. Failure to use the transfer portal is not what caused Clemson to lose that game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Nobody said to get the "Next Sammy Watkins"....just need....

Oct 10, 2023, 4:52 PM

better than what we got

the next "better than Beaux Collins"
the next "better than Adam Randall"

Re: so what??.....he FINISHED w/ 86yds and 2TDs.......

Oct 10, 2023, 4:33 PM

Jordan Travis transferred before the portal existed. What the OP is trying to convey (albeit poorly) is that Clemsons lack of using the portal, isn’t the reason the lost the games they’ve lost this year. It’s stupid turnovers and no kicker. Does that fall on coaching? Does that fall on development? We have a 5 star qb making stupid decisions. He is young though. I believe he will improve. To say Dabo should’ve taken someone from the portal is ridiculous. He was over scholarships. Next year may be a different story.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: so what??.....he FINISHED w/ 86yds and 2TDs.......

Oct 10, 2023, 4:41 PM

He was OVER the schollie limit because he doesn't truly believe in truly filling impactful voids through the portal......heck, in Dabo's eyes EVERYBODY is "elite" on the team.

He's had 5 years to adjust and bring in 1-3.......2-4 portal players, but he hasn't.

we've averaged 8.3 players/year leaving Clemson for the portal the last 5 years.............we've averaged over 10 the last 3 years. Dabo's answer is to give that "veteran" schollie to a walk-on and/or Freshman next year.......hence you'll be "forever young".

you say "stupid turnovers".........it's a talent and youth issue BECAUSE he won't backfill through the portal. You rarely saw etienne or gallman fumble.......you rarely saw an int from TL........for every int DW threw his ELITE TALENT was more than enough to overcome any turnover issues he had..............it comes down to talent and we don't have what we used to. That's why we've been underperforming and inconsistent.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

also, the portal opened 10/15/18...Travis transfered 11/1/18

Re: also, the portal opened 10/15/18...Travis transfered 11/1/18

Oct 11, 2023, 11:11 AM

Every single one of you are forgetting my point.

But to address the performance of FSU’s WRs against Clemson, they did not reallyyy play as well as people thought they would.

Clemson locked them down for the most part. Compared to what they had been doing previous to Clemson.

But……MY POINT IS, regardless of what transfers you get, what turnovers were made, etc…

CLEMSON WAS THE BETTER TEAM AND HAD ALL THE ADVANTAGES AT HOME, AND WAS UP BY 10 IN 2nd HALF.

If Clemson has an elite playmaker like Coleman on ITS team and NOT FSU, maybe Coleman makes that catch in OT for Clemson and we win. Or maybe Westco goes for 150 yards and 2 TDs in the whole game, and we win.

Elite playmakers DO NOT ALWAYS come from the portal now. Lord. We’ve been snagging them through recruiting throughout our history. And even more so in recent history.

Screw the portal, if you can recruit and mold a guy like Westco into something YOU want him to be, like Dabo, then that is the 100% better way to have players come through.

If Clemson has an elite playmaker against Duke, we could’ve scored the 2 times we fumbled inside the 10 yard line….. We stiilll may have slipped up at Duke because they are actually really good.

2024 student level member flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: also, the portal opened 10/15/18...Travis transfered 11/1/18

Oct 11, 2023, 4:19 PM

Westco is still in High School and has nothing to do with THIS YEAR. That's the entire point over the last 3-ish years about not having a TRUE PLAYMAKER at WR......had Dabo embraced the existence and usage of the portal earlier the slide could've been prevented.

Mistake you are making is assuming the portal is ALL or NOTHING............the correct way is a healthy mix of both that fits the needs of the team..........some need 40..........some need 15...........some need 3-5 (that's Clemson).

BTW the FSU WRs most certainly did well. Their top 3 WRs had 230 yards on 12-13 catches for 2 TDs against the #7 DEFENSE in the country ON THE ROAD.

Meanwhile we keep "clamoring" how well we did, when our top 3 WRs had 172 yards on 12 catches for ZERO TDs against the #79 Defense AT HOME.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bryant Wesco

Oct 11, 2023, 11:42 PM [ in reply to Re: Bryant Wesco ]

My point again..is that Coleman being a top receiver was the difference. Clemson does not have any receiver on that level, at least not yet.

The portal is not the only way to have top receivers. That is why I say Wesco is our chance.

no safety help bad call by coache's. Always good to have the horses but coaches can lose u the game.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Obviously Coleman wasnt the reason FSU won.

Oct 10, 2023, 4:54 PM [ in reply to Re: Bryant Wesco ]

I fumble 6 and a missed kick are why we lost. Had nothing to do with a lack of portal players. We obviously have the players to win the games.

We didn’t lose any last year because of the portal, and we didn’t lose any games this year due to the portal.

We lost the last 4 games because of poor QB play and our mistakes. Period.

Now.. Dabo is not immune to the portal. He has pursued absolute needs from there and we missed.

If we don’t have a legitimate starter at a position and have an absolute need, then we’ll dip in there again. This has been Dabo’s philosophy all along.

But we’re not now or ever going to sit kids to put in a transfer player It’s another case to recruit absolute needs. And Dabo prefers to recruit and develop as opposed to brining in transfers every class.

And no, it hasn’t cost a single game. We have the talent- the QB is improving and that’s all we need right now.

Maybe next season we’ll look for an OL or LB, but it’s ridiculous for some folks to come on here and get all bent out of shape, blaming the portal for us not currently being elite.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Bryant Wesco

Oct 10, 2023, 7:23 PM [ in reply to Re: Bryant Wesco ]

I am implying that Keon Coleman’s presence as a “top receiver in the nation” won them that game.

That was my whole point. Along with the point that Wesco is our path to playoff, which I said.

Meaning, if you have that kind of playmaker on your offense, things can be fixed immediately. They do not HAVE to come from the portal.

In facttt, Wesco will likely be tremendously better than Coleman.

A system that runs a variation of the wishbone. There would be a learning curve for anyone coming from that.
A lot of recruits that are running the spread in high school still have an adjustment period going to college.
If he translates the way Travis Etiennne did (which was slow at first) coming out of his HS offense, then we will be fine considering Travis became the all time leading ACC rusher, then I’ll take it!!

Totally agree with you and I will take it a step further.

Terrance Moore is going to be another great one for us. Does not have the current status of Wesco, but look at the schools that have offered him scholarships. Many of the same schools that offered Wesco but Moore has an offer from Ohio State. Ohio State does a good job recruiting receivers and they have offered Moore so this guy is no slouch.

It looks like our recruiting has started to rise again when you look at the freshman that are playing key roles on this team.

Dabo's critics claim he has hit the end of the road. I say we are getting back on track. We need Cade to continue to develop and get better every week in this new offense.

If we want Wesco to make it to signing day, then we all have to start donating to Tiger Impact. No more complaining about NIL, be a part of the solution. Its crowd funding. $50 a month. 100,000 people giving $50/mo and we can afford it.

We have to start paying these high school kids to come here.

I'm hoping Randall, Noble,& Hanifan will ultimately be upgrades over what we've had most of the past 3 seasons as well.

BRYANT WESTCO clocks an astonishing 24.17 mph

“Clemson WR Commit BRYANT WESTCO clocks an astonishing 24.17 mph!”
...I know he’s not the fastest in the world – I wonder what an Olympic 100M dasher gets?
I remember CADE saying the other day he clocked a 21.5.
...OK, I Googled it: “Bolt reached a top speed of 27.33 mph.”
Downhill on my bike I might be able to get it to 20.

That's not "TNET staff" opinion. That's ESPN.

I don't know that anyone disagrees that Wesco will be a shot in the arm that will help the team.

Oh ok. Yeah well I’m not trying to sit here and be that way lol.

I do think their main subject was in relevance to the receiver position exactly. Not just that adding Westco would be a simple “shot in the arm”, but a transformational key piece to where we used to be.

Hey guys, the key to an effective passing and running game all boils down to getting an efficient performing offensive line. Until this happens our offense will stay mediocore no matter how good our receivers and running backs are!!!!

O-Line has performed well enough in my opinion
