Game should have been over in regulation. 19-17. All day long that was a safety.

No it wasn’t. Never in the history of football can you initiate contact with a player outside the end zone and get a safety unless the ball is across the plane at contact. It wasn’t.

I heard them mention the plane and the ball and the momentum ... but only got snippets.
Thanks for explaining.

It’s called forward progress. You can look it up.

Did the ref blow the whistle for forward progress?

They don’t have to. The lineman spots the ball according to the progress after the play is dead. It’s no different than a rb getting pushed backward in a pile and then they blow the whistle. The ball is spotted at their forward progress prior to being pushed back.

Okay, if you say so but that was the clearest safety I have seen in years.

Except our QB was running backwards to get away from the rusher. That eliminates the forward progress argument.

No it doesn’t. He was running backward but parallel to the goal line. He did not willingly move into the endzone. The impact to his legs took him into the endzone. Forward progress is stopped at impact.

Cade was still trying to escape when his knee hit the ground

The ball was behind the plane of the goal line when his knee hit. If the helmets were reversed and we'd lost the game by 1 point, TNet would be beserk. Since the play went for us, we resort to an arcane rulebook interpretation.
It was a safety.
Oh well, at least the 1.5%'ers were knocked off the bandwagon. Mission accomplished.

His knee hit AFTER the impact of the defender pushed him backward.

If you watch the replay, Cade ran backwards to try to avoid the tackle. Much like he did several other times last night and lost about 40 total yards doing it.

His knee hit AFTER the impact of the defender pushed him backward.
Except the defender did not force Klubnik backwards. Klub purposely ran backwards to make a play.

See the picture attached. He turned back and then ran parallel to the goal line. The defender hit his legs causing him to go into the endzone. That is not a safety.

Safety in my mind as well. As bad as we have been w catastrophic plays we have somehow avoided at least 5 more, including another Cade fumble, his ridiculous floater to the right on 3rd down near end that could have been picked, that “safety” and at least another couple pick throws at Syracuse that were dropped (but which won’t be by Irish). Probably a few more in there as well. THIs, on top of special teams goofs is what causes fans to be disgusted when players, coaches act like these close loses are just fluke circumstances of bad luck befalling an otherwise sound “Clemson” team. 3 years of the gaslighting (of themselves as much as fan base) is more than enough
Hope he and team wake up, rally, play w business-like desire and effort to close this season out, but similar reckless, sporadic efforts will result in a few other teams getting their long awaited revenge
Go Tigers, WAKE UP!!!
