172 - CJ Spiller Gained 172 Yards for Clemson in Music City Bowl

In the Class of 2006, RB Clifford “CJ” Spiller was one of the most sought-after recruits in the country. He was the kind of five-star recruit who didn’t have to wait for an offer – he could simply choose any school in the country. No exceptions.

Many people seemed to assume he would sign with one of the in-state schools: FSU or Florida. To this day, those same people seem to make an art out of underestimating Clemson’s WR coach and recruiting coordinator (and Spiller’s primary recruiter) named Dabo Swinney.

Before Clemson:

Spiller starred at Union County High School in Lake Butler, Florida. According to Wikipedia, “during is senior year at Union County, he rushed for 1,840–yards on 176 carries for 30 touchdowns. He also had fifteen receptions for 249 yards.”

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/C._J._Spiller

As for his recruitment, he played it fairly close to the vest. According to the Greenville News:

No one knew.

Not even C.J. Spiller’s mother, Patricia Watkins.

A few seconds before her son strolled to the podium in front of a packed gymnasium on Feb. 1, 2006, at Union County High School in Lake Butler, Florida, to announce where he’d play college football, C.J.’s cousin slipped her a piece a paper with seven letters: CLEMSON.

Spiller then plucked a purple Clemson cap off teammate Kevin Alexander’s head and placed it on his own.

“We were right there in the heart of Gator and Seminole country and when he announced that he was going to Clemson the gym went totally silent," recalled Buddy Nobles, Spiller's coach at Union County.

Back in Clemson, South Carolina, there was the same shock that existed in the rest of the country for those who were watching, but also jubilation, particularly for Dabo Swinney, the Tigers' young recruiting coordinator and wide receivers coach, who promptly made a bold declaration.

"In this business, this is as big as it gets," Swinney said. "When you get the No. 1 running back in the nation, you can take your program to another level."

At that time Clemson was not exactly among the National Title contenders. So how did little ole Clemson land such a high-profile recruit? It had a lot to do with Dabo. According to Goupstate.com:

Swinney was as big a reason as any that Spiller selected Clemson out of Lake Butler, Fla., over higher-profile programs Florida, Florida State, Miami and Southern California.
As a high school senior, Spiller initially promised Swinney he would include Clemson among his schools to make an official visit.
Swinney apparently was in disbelief and not convinced Spiller would follow through with his promise.
Before Spiller knew what was happening, Swinney had written a pledge on the back of a business card and got Spiller to autograph it. The contract sealed Spiller’s visit and sparked a relationship that ultimately led to one of Clemson’s biggest recruiting catches under Bowden.
https://www.goupstate.com/story/news/2009/07/27/clemsons-swinney-takes-hands-on-approach/29786283007/

Apparently, Dabo now has that card framed in his office.

Being a man of his word, Spiller visited Clemson – and did something e did not do on any other visit. According to Sports Illustrated:

When Spiller visited Clemson, though, there was a different vibe. So much so he called his mother to tell her how much he liked it, the only time he called her while on a recruiting trip.

"Then you come here to Clemson, you know, it's more of a family atmosphere," Spiller said. "Close community, close-knitted. And it reminded me so much of Lake Butler. This was honestly the only visit where I called my mom on the visit. Called her, I told her this is a place where I can come and spend for three or four years."

"And that was coming off, you know, a Florida visit whenever Meyer just got there," Spiller said. "That's coming off going to Tallahassee with the legendary coach Bobby Bowden, having already been out there to Pete Carroll. So come here and be able to call back home and tell my mom said this is a place that I can come in and play for three or four years, that says something about this place."

So, so true! Well said, Mr. Spiller! Well said! He actually committed to Clemson having never even attended a game in the Valley. His first Death Valley game experience was his first game as a freshman.

For What It’s Worth:
It is well WORTH investing 3 minutes in watching this Spiller Highlight video while at Clemson. Enjoy:

Many people point to Spiller’s legacy at Clemson as a key building block for the national success that was still to come.

South Carolina Highway 172 is a 9.0 mile state highway that starts on the west end at US 178 near North, SC (birthplace of Eartha Kitt) heading east to US 21/SC 6 near St. Matthews in rural areas of Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties.

Clemson's baseball opponent, Manhattan College, is a private Catholic, liberal arts university in the Bronx in New York City, same as Fordham. It was established in 1853 as the Academy of the Holy Infancy for day students in Manhattan, became Manhattan College in 1863, and moved to the Riverdale section of the Bronx in 1922. Manhattan has about 3,700 students on a 22 acre campus in undergrad schools of liberal arts, business, health, engineering, and science. The athletic teams, the Jaspers, compete in NCAA Division I in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC). Notable alumni include Rudy Giuliani, Joseph Campanella, Glen Hughes of Village People, and Vincent Draddy (Izod Lacoste).
