Danny Ford - complete shock. I knew BV would probably leave one day, but that hasn't made it any easier.

I hate to see CBV leave, but we knew it would eventually happen. We got 10 great years from him, and he chose an opportunity that means lifetime financial security for him and his family. BV did things the right way.
Danny Ford being fired was a real shock and so unnecessary. For what DF had done for Clemson, the differences should have been resolved with him staying. Remember that the entire football team marched on the president's home, and the Clemson Nation was in an uproar for weeks.
For those who remember, Charley Pell's leaving was a huge shock. He was on TV the night before assuring everybody that the Florida thing was just a rumor. I still remember his words, "That is a rumor coming out of Florida, and it a lie. In fact, it is a #### lie. I'm not going anywhere." He left for Florida the next day.

Not close. Danny. I was a freshman and we used to go to all the basketball games and stand on the bleachers under the goal, (we had basketball back then). We made a huge sign that said give Max the Ax and Bring Danny Back. They seized it before the game even started and it still ticks me off.

It seemed inevitable…much like Venables leaving did. But Ford WAS Clemson football to me. Both hurt terribly. Ford hurt worse emotionally and philosophically, but maybe Venables hursts more on the field. Time will tell. The decade after Ford left sucked so bad. We are at a loftier place now than we were in 1990. Hopefully the next 10 years won’t look anything like the 90s.

Ouch. Not sure. I'm 72. Our family were peppering letters to the AD, BOT, and anyone else that would listen protesting his departure. But we didn't have access to information as you do today. So in ways, it was like mob mentality. Hence, felt it was unjustified.
I would have to say at this point, the departure of Brent. Torn. Tears of joy for he and his family. Tears of sadness because it's like a family member leaving. Concern because every player he coached would literally take a bullet for him. Concern because he is, to date, the best recruiter we've ever had (my opinion).
Isn't about any distrust in Dabo. Obviously a believer in what he can do, and he will get it done. How much of a setback it will be. It's unknown, and anyone that says otherwise isn't being honest. Dabo can't even predict that.
You can go out and hire the perceived best. You may get a Trevor or you may get a Hunter Johnson. With CBV here, you knew you had a TL16. Not going to turn in my orange or sit here and wallow in misery. I do enjoy debating it though.
Sorry for the long post but felt it needed perspective.

I've said the same thing (another natty). Just had to beat GA. Tech; just needed to kick a another fieldgoal at the end. That firing set us back 15 years. It was terrible.

Because I remember the 60's, was in Jacksonville for Danny's first bowl game and in Miami for the National Championship, Danny's firing was a much bigger deal.

That hurt. CDF left without having opportunity to finish the job.
CBV leaving on the circumstances he is leaving on is much different. He is leaving to accomplish what he can at the next level having already accomplished more than any other before him at Clemson as Defensive Coordinator. I applaud him and wish him the very best.

The departure of Brent Venables or the firing of Danny Ford?
Ford by a wide margin. The firing of Danny took over 20 years to recover from.

Danny Ford leaving was a shock that came out of nowhere
Dec 7, 2021, 6:52 AM
|
|
There was no internet or social media. All you had was waiting on tv and newspaper updates.
As a side note 1989 was my first fall away from Clemson in the working world. Not all of our games were on tv, especially in Eastern NC where I was living. I remember several Saturday afternoons watching the scores scroll across the bottom of ESPN looking for Clemson game score updates. Only way to keep up.
Had a lot of NC State and UNC fans around me, when Danny was let go they couldn't believe Clemson would fire him. He was Clemson football in the 80's.

screwed the program back then and it took a decade or so to get the wheels somewhat back on the track with Bowden. I don’t see the departure of BV having that kind of effect.
It was odd looking back on the Gator Bowl and realizing we were sitting in the stands for Danny’s last game without even knowing it.

Ford was a complete shock. We’ve known BV was leaving at some point. Ford was Clemson. Now if Dabo were to leave I’d say Dabo leaving would be worse. Hoping when Dabo leaves we have significantly better options because we are more of a National brand now. Don’t want another Ken Hatfield.

Dec 7, 2021, 8:38 AM

with Ford is that he wanted special dorms for his players and there was open donor cheating. The Administration was pushing back against it all. At the time most of the FB and BB players lived in Mauldin Hall and many of the top players drove brand new cars supplied by donors. Every student on campus knew there was rampant NCAA infractions.
I say ironic for two reasons: 1) Danny wasn't really the problem, the donors were and 2) He/they were just ahead of their time. NIL and the portal have truly killed the last vestiges of the "student athlete"
