How many assistant coaches would be too many to replace at one time?

If Dabo does one per year, it's going to take a while.

Scott for Riley might be the first.

Let Scott evaluate Austin and Grisham.

Help me remember-Did Streeter get that option on assistant?

Oct 22, 2023, 4:55 PM [ in reply to Crazy ideahow about Riley gets a season or two ]

Not sure Venables got to choose his assistants?

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Who in an appropriate pecking order would Streeter have chosen?

D - everyone but reed and eason

Even give reed a shot at DC, I could live with that.

O - everyone but Riley

S&C needs an overhaul too

MissTulsa knows as much football as any female Furman grad in the '70's. But she loves watching Clemson and sees everything from the 60,000 foot level, like, "Why doesn't he just throw it to an open guy?" But she was in personnel in her working life - back when they called it that - and her take on staff this morning during a walk:

"If Riley is all that, one has to wonder how he would accept that level of responsibility without the authority to bring his own staff. He saw the film, he knows the line doesn't block, but he came with no changes. One, that is odd. Two, if he doesn't make changes in the offseason, Dabo is managing things and we're in for 5 years of this. Three, the only change that makes sense is him and Scott at co-OC, with Scott as WR coach, and a Danny Ford lookalike comes in to coach line. Four, if Jeff takes a coaching job, and it's someplace other than Clemson, he knows what we suspect, and we're screwed."

I may be getting out my old GT gear. Grandma, from Ideal, Ga, used to say, "I'd rather feed a hungry dog any day than one with a comin' appetite." GT might finally be the latter, and fun to pull for.

She's spot on

And I think there's been some folks alluding to that here. Maybe he really did see that $2M number and just said eff it, I'm in.

Dabo needs to acknowledge his system isn't working right now. I think he's handicapped Riley to keep to his system - only valid explanation for everything being exactly the same despite bringing a dude in who has lit it up everywhere he's been

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why would Riley do that? Just the money? It does appear that way.

I'm sure there are schools watching that want to help him out with this bad spot he's put himself in.

Here's the scenario I'm hoping for:

Dabo didn't lose his mind overnight; he's the same guy who won two NCs. He therefore knows everything we're saying, and more. First move is to get Riley, to whom he says, "You do whatever necessary to get us back to NC level offense. I'll back you. However, I brought the staff here, and I won't trash them. They have a year under you to do their jobs. After that, you do what you want." IE, he is taking the Venables approach at OU rather than the Prime approach at CU. He is saying all the positive things to media, protecting the future careers of people he hired. We don't cut athletes we sign, and we don't throw our hires under the bus. But Riley has the authority, and he can and will do what is necessary after the one season.

If that is the case, we're fine. If not, all bets are off. I figure the above has a 50/50 chance of being right.

About Key, his pedigree is as good as GT has had at HC in a long time. Played under O'Leary, who was as good a college coach as anybody. Anybody. O'Leary got hosed in the Notre Dame thing; who cares what degrees he has, or what he put on an application decades prior? Key has a great coaching resume', including a great stint at Bama. If they can recruit at all, they will contend in the ACC in a year or two.

It is no coincidence, IMO, that Cristobal also coached at Bama. Last night was pure Saban. His guys out toughed Dabo's guys. If Dabo doesn't fix that, we're where we are. I'm hoping Dabo knows that better than we do and that the Riley hire is a first step. Fans want everthing done yesterday, but high standards don't allow that sort of thing. I'm hoping we're seeing the first step.

I liked Brent key as an o line coach. I'd like to see him turn it around

Or come coach on-line for Dabo and retire at Keowee

Dude was a fugging #######. He was with Johnson for years.

Key was OLine coach at bama for a hot minute, then got brought in as OC when Collins got the job.

Nothing from their groups at all. Grish is on thin ice, his WR can't block anyone older than five
